Long story short: I built a Core 2 Gaming rig, but as I was applying thermal grease on my proc my finger slipped and I touched the bottom. My BIOS and Windows recognised the proc fine and I thought I might have lucked out. Unfortunately, I get the message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006)" whenever Autorun is supposed to start for my driver CD and the messages "Only Part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed" and "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" when the VGA driver CD autoruns and when I try to install catalyst respectively.

I replaced the processor with an e6300 and am now experiencing the same problem. That almost definitely rules out a processor problem. Could it be an issue with my Optical or hard Drive? If so I may yet be able to return the replacement processor if I identify the problem within a day or so.

Thanks in advance.

LGA 775 Procs have pins on the mobo, so I didn't touch any pins. But the manual explicitly states that you should not touch the bottom of the processor.

I installed Windows on this optical drive though, and I haven't unplugged anything since. I should hope nothing came loose. I'll check though.

Alas I cannot: Trying to manually install drivers results in results in the generic this program cannot continue, the request could not be performed... I/O device error. or the ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request errors.

I think my problem is my optical drive, but am loathe to send back the 63 if i may need it again later (and thus pay for it again).

It almost sounds more like a ram problem. You should probrably run memtest86 and see if any problems come up.

I don't know what it is. I bought another optical drive and experienced the same problem. Prime95, however, runs fine even in the RAM test mode. I haven't tried Memtest. Just to further clarify that it is NOT an error with my optical drives: How many connectors should there be for an IDE Optical drive?
Currently I have the ribbon cable and the PSU power cable; anything I'm missing?

I'll try that. On another note: Is my optical drive installed correctly? I ask again: how many connectors is it supposed to have with the MoBo/PSU?

Yeah, there's a big ribbon cable and a 4-pin power connector attatched. The ribbon says "CD-ROM" on it, and 42-pins sounds about right.
