New build, no post

I've just put together a new new mini ITX build, but it won't start and I'm out of ideas. When I hit the power button the power light comes on, the fans spin up, one of the network ports lights up, and that's it. No beep. No POST. Nothing.
I've tried pulling one stick of RAM at a time, tried no RAM, I've unplugged the hard drive, tried another monitor and cable and another video card.

Specs are;
Jetway JNFA-Q67 motherboard
Core i3-3220T
2x2GB GSkill 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
Intel 120GB 530 series SSD
250W PSU

err, help?

I'm having this problem as well. Welcome to the club..

It's a new build, but you an try the basic procedure of disconnecting everything but the CPU and then clearing the bios. Then try starting up again.

This is a bit long winded, but detailed

cheers. May I ask why? Nothing major showed up when I was researching parts, would like to know how to avoid this in future.

Seasonic SS-250SU. A small 1U unit.

Jetway isn't known as a very high quality brand, so you may not get much in the way of support from them not to mention warranty support. With the bare bones hardware than you are running, the power supply chosen ought to be sufficient and shouldn't be the cause of this problem.

I suspect the problem is related to CPU/motherboard incompatibility.

The i3-3320T processor isn't shown as supported on the CPU support list for that motherboard. There is a BIOS upgrade on the support website (A07) that the site lists as providing support for 22nm Ivy Bridge processors (the i3-3220T is 22nm Ivy Bridge), but you'll need a compatible pre-Ivy Bridge CPU to install to flash the BIOS. In short, if your motherboard doesn't have the A07 BIOS installed, your CPU won't work with it.

You may just want to return the motherboard and select one that has support for your CPU.

Well that sucks. Live and learn, I guess.

Noticed that same thing, but I've never had this issue so I don't know how motherboards react to an incompatible processor.
oh well, I guess now I just have to figure out how to get out of this.

Unfortunately, it happens to lots of folks - it is always a possibility when multiple processor releases like Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge utilize the same CPU socket.

If the BIOS chip is socketed on the motherboard, you could try to contact Jetway to see if they will give you any support (i.e. sending you a BIOS chip, or RMAing the board for one with the latest BIOS flashed) - you have nothing to loose by contacting them (especially if you can't return the board). Another possibility would be to contact the seller of the board to see if they can help you out.

If you know somebody with a compatible processor, you could also ask to borrow it long enough to flash the BIOS. You can also look in FS/FT or on eBay ($40-$55) for a cheap compatible used CPU. It only has to work long enough to flash the BIOS, and you'd probably be good to go.

My only concern is that the support website doesn't specifically address which Ivy Bridge processors are supported (probably all of them, but I'd hate to waste the time/money getting the BIOS flashed just to find the CPU still isn't compatible).

All these years, who knew processor compatibility lists actually mattered.

Ditto. Time for a walk to figure out how to figure out how I'm gonna find my way out of this hole.

Unfortunately a lot of the older chipsets need a bios flash to even be able to post with a newer IB. I have an older ASRock Z68 board with this same problem because the only 1155 chip I own is an IB. Sounds like your case could even be worse - unsupported. I think the solution for you is another motherboard that you know supports IB in the state you'll receive it in.

Find a machine that has a supported processor and .... borrow that processor for a day. Or buy one and sell it when finished. Your total cost shouldnt exceed $20. You could probably also do an RMA and have them update the bios for you but that would probably cost the same in shipping.

Well that's helpful, a problem like that you'd expect the mobo to beep like crazy and errors to appear all over the screen. It may not be fun, but at least it tells you where to go next. No POST helps no one.

Only slightly.

Just meant that if the processor wasn't compatible with the motherboard I'd still have expected it to POST and give errors - which would at least indicate that the board is fine, but I'm a fool for buying the wrong CPU. It's still helpful, even if it's bad news.

As it is, with no POST, no real signs of life beyond turning on and turning off, it's not giving me much to work with. It's basically the same symptoms as a dead motherboard. And i've tried getting my hands on a compatible processor - came close but no cigar.

But I've learnt something new, which is what I came here to do - even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear. Motherboards don't tell you when you've screwed up the CPU.

Motherboards don't tell you when you've screwed up the CPU.

I have had older LGA 775 motherboards post and even function with an unsupported CPU. They usually just can't read the multiplier or FSB correctly. Something must be special about the new motherboard or CPU technology. I'm still learning about the newer stuff. I still run a 5 year old CPU/PC, but I did build an IB and now a Haswell for the wife.
