new build restart issue

The problem with my computer is it every time I cold boot it starts up starts loading windows then goes to the blue screen of windows xp right before the desktop shows up then my whole computer restarts. Then after it restarts windows really starts up and it seems to be fine. I did have it hang up doing this where it kept restarting over and over, but for the last week it has only been restarting once every time I start it up. I installed windows on this computer with an old nvidia 6600 I have because my 8800gt was late in the mail and I had no similiar problems. This started when the 8800gt was installed is I guess what I'm trying to say. Has anyone heard of a similiar problem, have a solution, or do need to try and return my 8800gt?
Thanks in advance.
my new system:
intel core duo
dfi iron blood
8800gt
windows xp
2 gig ram

What method did you use to uninstall 6600 drivers and then install 8800 drivers as it sounds like a possible driver conflict? The 6600 drivers may not have been properly removed.

Edit: Has Windows been updated? And do you have updated chipset drivers, audio drivers, all other driver updates, BIOS updates etc?

Uninstall all video drivers first then, use CCleaner and remove the unnecessary crap. Then scan and remove the problems it finds in the registry. It will ask you to back up, an obviously say yes!

I prefer drivercleaner. It only costs $10 and when you are using it there is no need to go backing up registry etc. It does the chipset, audio and graphics drivers perfectly.

I just installed the latest nvidia drivers which are suppose to be good for the 6000 through 8000 series nvidia. I initially installed a clean version of xp with the 6600 in place then a week later installed the 8800 and have been running for a week with the restart issue.

Probably be a good idea to remove all video driver traces and then re-install latest 8800 driver from NVidia website. Use CCleaner, DriverCleaner or any other program.

Alternatively is a clean install of XP.

Best to use this method:
1. Install XP and update all Windows updates
2. Reboot and wait for hdd activity to stop
3. Install latest chipset drivers (get them from DFI)
4. Reboot and wait for hdd activity to stop
5. Install latest graphics and audio drivers
6. Reboot

That's a point. It's a new build and I assumed a quality PSU but never asked. What PSU are you using disruptorsignal and how old is it?

Ya I got DX9c and my psu is a brand new corsair hx520w that worked fine with the 6600. I'll try reinstalling nvidia and dfi drivers.

I suggest you don't touch any drivers; rather, debug the dumpfile and figure out why your PC gives you a BSOD the 1st time you boot - read my web page, read the debug section, and post the output of '!analyze -v' here, once you've got the debugger set up. Total time is 5-10 mins, and you'll have a real answer to your problem, not a guess.

I checked out your blog, but I don't have any dump files in the minidump folder. My computer immediately restarts when it happens with no delay one second on next off.

Disruptor man, did you try both suggestions in my 12:01AM post dated 01/21/08? It is very likely (probably 90%) to be the way you installed the 8800 drivers that is causing the problem. The first suggestion (with DriverCleaner or CCleaner) only takes 5-10 minutes and if that doesn't work then a search through dump files is a good idea. A dump file is not guaranteed to help you although I have had joy using that method once other simple solutions have been tried. I use DriverCleaner a lot as I tend to try unreleased drivers where I need a clean uninstall and it is a reliable program. If you did try it or CCleaner you must follow the instructions to the letter or it will not work. A clean uninstall of drivers (especially with graphics) is vital for a stable system.

If a box BSODs and a dumpfile is available, that shows the cause of the problem. Some of us (like me) may not be able to give a definitive answer for every dumpfile, but if it's enough of an issue, a MS engineer can give a definitive answer, and it *will* tell you why the box crashed, not ifs, ands, or buts.

Anything else is guessing. Educated, smart guessing, sure, but still, it's guessing.

I used CCleaner to remove nvidia drivers and reinstalled the drivers and am still having the problem. I hit f8 at startup and disable automatic restart and got a BSOD with the code

STOP: C0000145 APPLICATION ERROR
THE APPLICATION FAILED TO INITIATE PROPERLY
(0XC0000142)

CLICK OK TO TERMINATE THE APPLICATION

is ruffly what it said. I still am not finding any dump files in the C:\windows\minidump folder. I used MSRpts, but I'm unsure what to make of all the files. Suggestions are appreciated. I'm gonna try a repair of xp or new install of xp this weekend if nothing works till then. Thanks for all the help so far.
