CBS stood by its reporting. "As is standard practice at CBS News, the documents in the '60 Minutes' report were thoroughly examined and their authenticity vouched for by independent experts"

Has CBS released the identities of these "experts"?

I'm interested in who supplied the "memos" - but yeah, the "experts" need to be identified too.

The WaPo story:

[Hat tip: The Sage of Knoxville]

Documents unearthed by CBS News that raise doubts about whether President Bush fulfilled his obligations to the Texas Air National Guard include several features suggesting that they were generated by a computer or word processor rather than a Vietnam War-era typewriter, experts said yesterday.

Experts consulted by a range of news organizations pointed out typographical and formatting questions about four documents as they considered the possibility that they were forged. The widow of the National Guard officer whose signature is on the bottom of the documents also disputed their authenticity.

The documents, which were shown Wednesday night on "60 Minutes II," bear dates from 1972 and 1973 and include an order for Bush to report for his annual physical exam and a discussion of how he could get out of "coming to drill."

The dispute over the documents' authenticity came as Democrats stepped up their criticism of Bush's service with the National Guard between 1968 and 1973. The Democratic National Committee sought to fuel the controversy yesterday by holding a news conference at which Sen. Tom Harkin (Iowa) pointed to the documents as a fresh indictment of Bush's credibility. . . . .
BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA.

Well, a couple things in this lame case of attempted mainstream media sabotage stand out, IMO. First, it's a good thing old Dan Rather retires soon. Guess you had to make that one last attempt to go out with a bang, eh Danny? No Pulitzer for you this year. Heh.

Second, Harkin still comes off as just another blabbering fool.

Rather, who anchored the segment presenting new information on the president's military service, will personally correct the record on-air, if need be, the source explained from New York.

Nice grammar by the intrepid Drudge:

The source, who asked not to be named, described CBSNEWS anchor and 60 MINUTES correspondent Dan Rather as being privately "shell-shocked" by the increasingly likelihood that the documents in question were fraudulent.

FWIW, I think these docs are probably fake, but I think the same of Drudge's story. This is the same man who broke the ***EXCLUSIVE*** story that Sen Kerry had picked Sen Clinton as his running mate.

I think they were planted by Rove to offset Cheney's giant FAT mouth saying that if Americans vote for Democrats then Osama will strike again and it will be all their fault for voting for the Democrat...

The only thing we heard today - all day - nonstop - was about these documents

As stated earlier, Fox is on this as well.

I did really like ABCs reporting of the matter on nightline.

When the mans family says there fake and experts are saying they are fake, odds are they are.

Just think folks...just under two months left...its gonna get worse!

True, but this is still the main story on their web page.

By now Americans might have reached a saturation point and are fed up with Military Service records being part of this campaign .. maybe?

I think they are fake, but I don't think the family's reaction is relevant to this issue. I don't really believe his family can conclusively say whether or not he would have written a memo like these - they are short and don't reveal much of the drafter's personality. That said, they certainly appear to have been written on a computer, rather than a typewriter.

I wonder where CBS came by them. I must say I find it a little tough to believe a forger would make such transparently fake memoranda, which in turn makes me suspect they originated on the right side of the aisle, rather than the left. We shall see . . .

You said Bush's Guard Duty was still an open issue, I simply brought up another 'open issue'.. But I am glad you hold me in such high regard. Let me explain something, and I will speak slowly because I understand you are an attorney and have a hard time with facts...

Bush _IS_ the President.. his Guard Duty means NOTHING because HE CURRENTLY HOLDS THE JOB.. Bush is a known quantity... Kerry is the one seeking the position, HE should be the one explaining HIS shortcomings.

LOL - never let it be said you lack imagination. By that logic, Spiro Agnew's acceptance of bribes when he was governor of Maryland was irrelevant once he became VP, since he too was a "known quantity".

You are a troll of the highest order, but of the lowest quality. Any truly successful troll would show a little more finesse . . .

Denounce the forgery

Never talk about Bush's Guard Record again.

Why, and why? It seems to me he has zero connection to these documents, and indeed has never commented on them to the best of my knowledge. I think President Bush's Guard service is potentially still an open issue (that depends what the facts are), though I don't think it behooves Sen Kerry to dwell excessively on it.

I still wanna know why Kerry lied about situations regarding his Purple Hearts.. so I guess that makes things even..

Gee.. guess what it reminded me of when you said it?? Some young man in Iraq - a Bush Supporter - who had HIS HEAD CHOPPED OFF -- oh wait.. it was SAWED OFF...

JUST STAY AWAY...

If you want to insult someone .. you should start with yourself.

That is my thought as well. If they are forgeries, they are such obvious forgeries that I suspect Rove. It is exactly what he would pull to discredit opposition. He will do anything to keep the focus off of Dubya and his record.
