I have msi neo4 plat. There is also 3 pins missing from the 939 3000+ chip.

When i power up the system. Nothing comes up on the screen.. wont post.. but all the fans, and lights are on. The led debug lights hang on 4 lights.. and ive read it in the manual that that means cpu failure.

But what does 2 beeps mean? Its 2 short beeps. Is that Cpu failure too?

I want to know if that means cpu failure too so i can make sure ITS just the CPU problem, and have the cpu replaced.

Thanks in advance.

It's 100% a cpu problem. Did you follow the repair link posted over at the MSI forum? He'll be able to salvage that chip for you at a minimal cost.

Do you actually see pins broken off or is it just 3 blank spots? The pin grid is not normally a solid grid, there are a few spots that have no pins and are not supposed to have pins in those spots. But if you can actually see pins that look like they were broken off the they obviously are, in which case why would you actually expect the system to boot with an obviously broken CPU?

There are 3 pins missing from the 939 3000+ chip due to my clumsiness (installing cpu the wrong way) =/ first time building a comp.

I tried to boot it up anyway because ive heard that some pins are not really important (ground) pins.

Fasteddie.. this guy aint responding my e-mail and im growing impatient!! lol. I just bought a new athlon chip to replace my old one.. I got the OEM instead this time.

My question is.. Will i be able to re-use the old heatsink/fan onto my new chip? Or do i have to buy new thermal paste/compound? If i do.. which thermal paste/compound should i buy? Thanks in advance.

I seriously would not recommend for you to use Arctic Silver 5. It is certainly not for a novice. I wouldn't even recommend it to those who think they know what they are doing. It is messy and it is conductive. A little in a wrong place can cause problems.

For your first build, just use the fan assembly that comes with your chip. It will most likely have a thermal pad already on it, which will be sufficient. But, since you say you got an OEM chip (not a good idea, IMO), then you will need a separate fan assembly and thermal compound. For thermal compound, you can use whatever is supplied by the fan assembly or you can get some Shin Etsu (most preferred thermal compound beyond those who use AS).

Breaking the pins on your chip was unfortunate. Take your time and relax, but pay attention. Don't force anything, especially the CPU. A CPU will fall right into place in a ZIF socket. The only thing that may be a tight fit are Molex power connectors. Other than that, if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. ...Sorry, that just ran off my tounge like a jingle. If it doesn't fit, there is probably good reason (which is what Johnny Cochran meant in the first place).

I have a retail AMD stock heatsink/fan.. can i reuse that with my new OEM athlon chip? There is still some thermal pad gray stuff on the heatsink..

AS5 is the choice. Yes, the heatsink is fine, just be carefull inserting the chip this time.

And yes, babyjocko is right, it's very conductive, so don't get it anywhere else but on the cpu. A thin layer that doesn't ouze when you clamp down the heatsink.
