I'm building a new computer for my dad.
This will be my second build and I'm only thirteen (I think I'm the youngest one this form)
back to the computer.

looking to spend ~$1200
already have case (CM HAF 922)
and monitor

the things that the computer needs to be able to do.

  • playback 3d blueray when they come out
  • do light gaming
  • be able to use it as a hackintosh
this is not urgent he wants built by the end of summer

any suggestions would be welcome

You might just wanna go over here and look around and see if the Hacintosh hassle is worth it to you. I once did it just for the thrill of it and decided osX wasn't for me. I prefer win7 to osX.

Kinda hate the idea of picking my hardware for the purpose of simplicity of installing and running an OS.

Might have better response in the MB or maybe All things Mac forum

~$1200 budget... and you're just gonna do light gaming? I think someone's too used to Macs...

Do you, or your dad, really need a Core i7? A Core i5-750+P55 mobo is a pretty solid setup, even for a nice gaming rig. A Phenom II X4 + some AMD chipset-based mobo is a cheaper alternative, but isn't necessarily that much slower either.

I'm just not convinced that you need to spend $1200 for a rig only just capable of doing some light gaming. Blu-ray playback shouldn't be a problem on the AMD route either. The AMD chipsets like the 785G is fully capable of H.264 hardware decoding.

I don't now anything about Hackintosh, unfortunately. Definitely check out the Apple subforum.

at fffblackmage I'm not the one paying for it and that is what he told me he wanted. The only reason he wants a computer built for him is that he has to have everything better than me. forget the motherboard and cpu what about a psu and video card? Also my dad's last laptop was an amd and he hated it and said this one must be intel

does it matter which video card I use to do 3d blueray playback?

Blu-ray playback is not very demanding at all. A core2duo and onboard graphics can handle it these days.

As far as what video card to get just find what software your gonna use and look at the suggested cards. Alos you need to see what is good for osX if your gonna do that also.

Hmm....I thought osX doesn't do blu-ray anyways or did Steve finally give in ???

I'm not talking about regular blueray playback but 3-D blueray playback the one that needs 3-d vision glasses from nividia

You answered your own question.

So far, it looks like you want some sort of Intel system paired with an Nvidia gfx card.

There are plenty of similar builds in other threads to base your own build off of (even the one in your sig doesn't look too bad), but if you want Hackintosh, it doesn't look like you're gonna get much help with that here. You're better off in the "All Things Apple" sub-forum, or some other forum that has a focus on Hackintosh.

I believe you are asking if there is a computer based 3D BR drive available for the playing of 3D movies from your computer. As of right now I don't know for sure but I believe not. There are home based units to play 3D content on a 3D capable TV but I'm not aware of a computer based unit yet. Nvidia has a 3D system you can purchase right now. In some ways it is similar to the Samsung home 3D system as it uses the LCD shutter glasses to accomplish the same effect however it is for games and not movies. The 3D effect is accomplished via Nvidia software and a 120Hz monitor and shutter glasses to get 3D to work. The DVD drive has nothing to do with making the visuals work other than install or running the game. The Nvidia system uses a standard DVD drive but the TV based system uses a dedicated 3D DVD drive. At least according to the person I talked with when I was looking at a 3D tv system recently.
