Hello

I have a friend that just recently bought a new computer.

He put all the parts togther on it, and when he powers up the computer he doesn't get any video on the monitor, any keyboard lights and the like...

We originally thought the CPU might be bad so we replaced it, but he still has the same problems.

He has tried other video cards to see if they work to no avail, he has also taken out the RAM and disconnected everything but the video card from the motherboard and still nothing.

The motherboard has LED's on it for RAM and such and they come on just fine.

So we are both clueless as to what could be wrong.

He has a AMD 1333, Gigabyte 7vtx motherboard, 512 megs of DDR ECC RAM from crucial, a leadtek geforce 2 pro with 32 megs, and a fop38 heatsink and delta fan... hes also using artic silver 2 thermal paste for the cpu...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW there are no beeps that the computer makes, just sits there slient as can be.

Thanks

Have you tried a different power supply? Is the case switch plugged into the board correctly? When you are turning it on, where are you turning it on from? The back of the Power supply? Is there any movement of fans at all? do the CD-ROM devices and hard drives spin up?

No, havent tried a diffrent power supply yet, he has a brand new antec sx830 case and power supply.

The case switch is plugged in correctly, just to make sure he tried it both ways.

He's turning it on from the front of the case, only way I can think of to do it...

All the fans spin, the fan on the northbridge chip on the motherboard spins up (which is plugged into the motherboard) the harddrives and cd-roms spin up...

That does sound like the CPU, it is seated properly? Could be the motherboard, but that's really hard to check without another board.

yea as far as I know its seated properly... he ordered it from newegg, and like I said already had it replaced once. The cd-rom lights up, but the floppy drive never does, umm not much more I can really think of right now, is it possible he got 2 bad cpus? hehe

Just a thought.Check that your voltage setting is correct. A friend of mine had the same problem. I thought the processor was bad also, turned out that the power supply voltage was set on 230 on a new inwin case. A simple thing to correct but easy to overlook. Once I set the voltage to 115 everything worked fine.

Does the CPU fan need to plugged into a proprietary header? Check the manual. Is the board setup to auto detect CPU voltage and multiplier? Can you test the CPU on another board? That would tell whether to start looking at the board or not.

Yeah, the CPU fan does need to be plugged into a special header:
Gigabyte
Since you said the floppy drive isn't lighting up,
see if unplugging it has an effect.
Seems it should beep at you, sure the speaker is plugged in?
Do the fans continue to run, or just start then stop?
