New cpu and heatsink

Ok the tax man is coming and giving me a very nice refund. I am currently on an Asrock z68 Extreme 3 gen 3 board Intel 2120 8gbs of ram and an Corsair A50 HSF. Storage is not a issue in this question.

I am not a gamer so my 6950 2GB card is ample for anything I do. What I do use my computer for is Video encoding transcoding and joining.

I am going to get a new cpu and motherboard ram and heatsink. The board I will get will be the Asrock Z77 Extreme 4. The ram will be 16gb of Gskill Snipers DDR3 1600. Now the cpu is a bit of a question mark right now. I am looking at the i5 3570k and the i7 3770k. Now I have looked at the benchmarks on this site for those 2 cpus and they are very close in the video ones.

I get alot of videos that are series and want to join them. Usually like 4-6 in a series. They are WMV format. Now I usually use Virtual Dub to join avi's without recompression. So I have to convert the wmv's to avi then input them into Virtual Dub and join and edit out the 5 sec intro on each clip after the first one. Then direct stream copy it out to another avi file. The conversion is what is going to take some time. My i3 2120 and my amd gpu usually take about 3 hrs to convert a 3.5gb wmv to xvid.

Now I know the i5 should cut that down a very good bit. How much will the i7 cut it down? I know there is a 100 bucks between the i5 and the i7. I just trying to figure out will it be worth it for me. This is all personal usage that I am doing. Nothing for a job or anything at this time

Second part of the long post is I want to overclock the cpu hence me getting a k version. Now I am not sure how good the Corsair A50 I have will be overclocking as I can't overclock the i3. Now after doing some research I came up with this list of Heatsinks. Now all my friends are telling me to get the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo. I am a bit hesitant getting that. Not sure why but just am. I have had Xigmatec in the past a Dark Knight II on an Q9550 and got that to 3.5-3.7 with nice temps. Now I am not an extreme overclock nor a good one either. This will be my first cpu I can overclock since the Q9550. I don't want an AIO water one like the Corsair H50 cause I had one leak on me.

So with that long winded post I would like to get some opinions from folks as which way to go on the cpu and hsf. I am pretty set on the motherboard. I have a Asrock board currently and like it very much. Ram I like Gskill so am lookng at the snipers for the low profile so as not to get in the way of the heatsink. This is all going to be housed in a new case for me. Replacing my Haf 922 with a Corsair 400r case.

So thanks for taking a look at this for me and giving me suggestions

Save the $100, spend it on storage or something instead, go with the 3570K.

The A50 would probably get you to 4.2GHz, those 4 HSF's are pretty much the same, but without looking at any tests/reviews... I'd say the 212E, or Gelid would be the best, since they have 4 heatpipes rather than 3, the 212E is cheaper... so... go with that. (of those 4).

Ok thanks for the reply.

I also found this Heatsink and yes its more then the others but has gotten extremely good reviews and results. I have no problems spending the cash for this.

Stick with the Corsair A70. I had the Hyper 212+. Not much different from the EVO except for no gaps between the heat pipes. It comes with 1 fan, your A70 has 2, and the A70's heat pipes are 8mm compared to 6mm on the EVO.

Not sure how much difference in performance there is between the 212+ and the 212+ EVO.

Comparing the A70 to the 212+ (2 fans @2000 RPM), load temps (Prime 95 large FFts and IBT max ram) were 3-4 degrees cooler with the A70.

I don't have an A70 I have an A50. Did you mean that or what? I am seriously thinking about the Phanteks PH-TC12DX. I linked it in the above post and added to my heatskink wishlist. The A50 is only 3 heatpipes and I guess I want to get away from that and into a 4 heatpipe one

On a side note, you should try AsfBin to combine your wmv files without reencoding.

Edit: Wrong program...

Oops, didn't have my reading glasses on.

Yeah, if you want to do some serious oc'ing you will need something better than the A50. See this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2298655

I just looked at my money and was able to swing the Extreme 6 from MC. I went ahead and bought it.

MrPikins thanks for the heads up on that. I was really looking to convert to avi and join but if I can do it in wmv then one conversion that would be better. I will give it a try tonight and see.

Now for the Heatsink. The 212 Evo does look nice but I am still not with it. I like that Phanteks PH-TC12DX alot yes its more money. Comes with dual fans and does a very good job of cooling.

Just get the new Corsair H80i for $99 at MicroCenter and be done with it.
It does a great job cooling even on silent mode.
3770k overclocked with HT all the way if you are going to do video encoding.

As I stated I am not getting another one of those type heatsinks I had the H50 leak on me and it soured me from them.

Its a toss up right not for the cpu. Some say i7 other say i5 hence the starting of this thread.

i7 is obviously better, but it's not that much better.

Quick examples being shown here... if that's worth $100, then get the i7.

Storage is probably more valuable, you could get a 128GB SSD, or 2TB Sata3 for that $100.

$189 for 3570k vs. $229 for 3770k at MC.

4 cores with hyperthreading is effectively 6 cores.

3770k overclocked.

Samsung low profile ddr3 1600 kits - you can run them 8-9-9-21 1T 1866 16gb on Asrock boards.

I don't have a MC near me. Closet is 5 hrs away. So those prices are not a reality for me. They also suck they cancelled my order for the Extreme 6 and made it an instore only item now. That is utter BS. So I was charged the 105 bucks and not refunded yet.

I don't need anymore hard drives or SSD's I see no need to run ram at 1866 for what marginal gain you may get from it.

So as it stands now I am back to the Extreme 6 from Newegg as MC welched on there offer for the Extreme 6. The Extreme 6 at this time is 5 bucks cheaper then the Extreme 4

So I can't buy in store any where to take advantage of deals like that. So please don't bring up MC in store deals again nor online deals again. I will not buy from them. I would rather pay more from the Egg then save several dollars from MC.

I asked here to see what others thought about the 100$ difference. I just can't make my mind up.

Gotcha.

They overclock the same, the 3770k actually better sometimes.

The more "cores" the faster crunching or video conversion will be.

At the same 4.8ghz my 2600k "seemed" about 1.5x faster than my 2500k in converting and merging flip mini HD 720p clips from mp4 to mkv.

That is what you do - so 3770k - it will be faster.

Well spoke with MC today and they said it was a stock issue so there system auto cancels the orders. They will honor the price for me. If I call them when it comes back in stock they will honor that price. Thats a good thing.

Well it seems that price was a weekend special and they won't honor it once the special is over. The rep I spoke with on the phone gave me miss information.

So after this issue with MC I will never consider them again as a place to buy my stuff. I had no idea that price was a special for a certain period of time. I was given the link in this post bought it and was cancelled. They gave no indication on the product page this was a special and was only good till supplies lasted.

I will stick with Newegg never had an issue with them. They may not be the cheapest but they are an upstanding E-Tailer and will get my business always. I have bought from them for 10 yrs now.

Well I bought my stuff yesterday and its on its way to me know will have it by 5pm cst today.

I bought the Asrock z77 Extreme 4 motherboard Intel i7 3770k 16gbs Gskill Sniper ram and the Coolermaster TPC 812. It was 59.99 with a 20 MIR on it. 6 Heatpipes and 2 vapor chambers. For the price couldn't beat it and its better then the phanteks cooler.
