The deal turn over on this machine is very quick.

Todays deal is: $150 instant rebate and a $100 MIR or 256 RAM for 128 price.

It has the same stripped down version for $349 (before MIR).
Intel® Celeron® Processor at 2.0GHz, 128KB Cache, 400MHz FSB
128 MB of Ram
40 GB HD.

You can get the Intel® P®4 Processor at 2.26GHz, 512KB Cache, 533MHz FSB for an additional $49 (worth it in MHO).
which kind of brings it back to the $100/$100 with a free processor upgrade deal as before.

or

they have double ram for free so you go from 128 MB to 256MB (2x128 though). Instead of the MIR

My question is if you take the free ram upgrade, do you loose the $100 MIR? I think that was an issue before, but I do not recall if it is now (i would think not with all the deals going on). (Confirmed that you get either or, not both)

So my deal would be:

Intel® P®4 Processor at 2.26GHz, 512KB Cache, 533MHz FSB
128 MB DDR, ECC, 400Hz
40GB 7.2K RPM IDE Hard Drive
1Yr,Parts + Onsite Labor (Next Business Day)
Keyboard
Logitech Mouse
No Monitor
No OS

for $298 After MIR

***Update***
They have now dropped the $150 instant rebate in favor of just a $100 instant rebate. Not sure when this happened, but it did.

You get free shipping for 3 to 5 business days (got it from a coupon code anyways so it does not add to the deal for me).

You still can get a free Palm Zire or the Digital Camera.

Thanks for that, I see I missed it as I am used to just skipping to the important parts (processor, ram, & HD). I also see someone else made a better post than mine so please let it die in peace.

Ordered my 400SC 3 days too early. Anyone want to give me their free Palm Zire? (if you already have one from past deals) I'll pay shipping.

Thing is I bought this for my dad whose computer died and needed a new one quickly. He needs the new one for work so I can't really return it and wait. I guess I'll just try the CSR.

People have called Dell in the past with a similar situation as yours, and Dell was kind enough to send the item to them.

These "dual-deals" have been around a lot, so I believe the guys when they say you will get one or the other, not both. The rules clearly state that. Anyhow, you also forgot to pickup your free keyboard and mouse.

i'm gonna sink for this this weekend. as far as ram is concerned, if i use this as a workstation, i don't think i need ECC

also, i was gonna go with a 1 GB solution from mushkin, but i think it was 3200. i haven't brushed up on memory recently, so is this enough for the 800MHz FSB?

btw, how is this for gaming/developemtn with a good vid card?

Man dell must be growing these on trees in India or something! This is insane! They must have sold over 1 million of them last year alone!

I called Dell today to find out about the memory upgrade and they confirmed what the others have said...You can choose the $100 rebate or double memory but not both.
My oder would not have gone through the way it confiqured.

BMdoobieW, Thanks for the heads up I forgot to add the mouse and keyboard I had them add it to the order when I called Thanks again.

Do a google search for "The 400SC FAQ" and you'll find your answers. These are nice machines, if you have an OS available I really can't see going wrong with one of these.

The motherboard is an unbranded Dell, but is believed to be OEM'd by Intel. No overclocking here, but quiet, with AGP and a large amount of flexibility for processors / FSB / memory arrangements.

ok, so it didn't die, but these machines have been toted as high end gaming machines for cheap. Add some more ram and a decent AGP 4x/8x vid card and away you go.

I also see now that they no longer have the $150 instant, it is now $100. I had saved it previously in my cart, not sure what will happen to it.

Edit:
Hmm, very odd. the first page says it has $100 instant and $100 MIR, but when you click on the page to customize it, it shows a $150 Instant

It shows the $150 instant rebate price until you add it to your cart, then it goes to $100 instant.

Well, the A*hole answer is to use the search; there are a couple dozen 400SC threads with more good info than you can shake a stick at.

The "Hey, it's a Friday afternoon" answer is, they use an Intel i875 motherboard with onboard sound, GigE, SATA, 4 PCI, 4 DDR, and an AGP 8X slot. It is, however, Dell-specific and you won't be able to put this board in a non-Dell case.

The 400SC is a great deal at any price under $325 or so, IMO. I was lucky enough to get mine for $224 (AR) with a Celeron, 128MB, and a 40GB HD. Of course, it now has 1GB RAM and 280GB of drive space If I didn't like my primary rig so much, I might be tempted to get another one to replace it.

These are solid machines and talk about quiet.. You can't hear them at all.. I bought 3 of them on Oct 5th of last year when the really good deal was going on. Ended up paying $191 each for the 400SC w/2.0Celeron and $289 for a P4 2.4ghz 800fsb shipped.

The rebatestatus.com peeps tried giving me some trouble on the rebate saying it was invalid to have 3 systems on 1 order number but a quick post on the customer care forums at Dell cleared that up and I finally received my rebate check for $300.00 today actually.

RaymondY, I don't think you'll have any problems with that memory in the 400SC. I upgraded the memory in each of the systems I purchased and put in Buffalo PC3200 256mb configured in dual channel and it runs fine. I'm actually running mixed pairs of Crucial and Samsung in one of the other 400SC dual channel and it's fine. They are rock solid systems in nice cases and are built well. Definitely a good buy.

The current deal isn't that hot, but it's a good deal nonetheless. Especially with Dell's 30day policy. I didn't do it on the 400SC's I bought but if I buy some more I'll do it in the future. Which is, order the base system then return the items back to dell for a credit. ie. (hard drive and memory). Then just order newer/bigger components from newegg or do the rebate deals through various B&M's.
