I have been thinking about getting a DC. Should I get this sports package, or preorder the Smash pack from EB world for $179 -20% passport? I will definately end up getting the 2k games, but the Smash looks like a better deal unless the games that come with it are junk. I don't mind waiting for the Smash if it's a better deal.

Thanks

You don't need a mod chip foryour "backup" games... they are self booting these days..

JC - Look on yahoo auctions and search "dreamcast", you should be able to find what your looking for.
re-me - your question was, is there a mod chip for playing psx games on the dreamcast. I have not heard of one, but there is a software product called Bleem, (check out bleem.com for more info), it has not been release yet, but it looks very interesting. They will sell you a cd that you load first and then you can play psx1 games includeing backups on your dreamcast with higher resolution.

So Sega hasn't built any sort of copy protection into their systems? That's crazy...

Just tried to get Sega Rally 2 and Time Stalker over the phone and they said they are 39.95, not 9.95

Hmmm, nice deal but I'll wait until the DC drops to $99.

My .02 - the Sega Dreamcast is the machine to beat right now. It is the console to own right now. Then again, I don't own one - I'm waiting for it to drop to $99.

This time next year, when MGS2 comes out for the PS2, the PS2 will take off. Should be right around the time X-Box is released.

Don't expect Nintendo's GameCube before summer of 2002 at the earliest. They never release a console when they initially say they will. By the time they do release it, the X-Box will be the box to have (circa 2nd half 2002).

Dates the system will have a good selection of software and be the system to own:
2000/2001 Sega Dreamcast
late 2001/2002 Sony Playstation 2
2002 Microsoft X-Box
2003 (if at all) Nintendo GameCube

Of course, by 2003, we should see Dreamcast 2 and hear the first rumblings of Playstation 3... *sigh*

Just to clear up a few things about the Dreamcast...

The copy protection scheme used by the DC is a special CD format called GD-ROM which stores 1 GB on a regular CD. Hackers were able to break this by using special hardware to read the data off a GD-ROM and copy it to a standard 640MB CDR. They can fit it because some games don't use more than 640 MB. Those that do, the hackers rip extra stuff out like music or cutscenes.

To run the CDR, you originally had to load a boot CD first. Nowadays, the special boot code comes on disk with the hacked CD-R.

(For reference: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-2181596.html)

The PS1 emulator for DC has been announced by Bleem (http://www.bleem.com) but as yet, has not shipped. The interesting thing about it is that it lets you run PS1 backup CDRs without need of a mod chip as in the original PS1s.

We have a Sega DreamCast from the JC Penney deal ($70). Our favorite games are Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, ReVolt, Gundam Wing, Toy Story 2, Slave Zero, Hydro Thunder, and Test Drive 6. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 looked good as well. These look even better on a 56" projection TV!!

My 7 year-old has already ruined our original Sonic Adventure due to scratches. We had to replace it. Is there a way to make a backup of the original disk so we will not have to replace the original disk each time? I would rather give him a backup instead of the original to play. We have a Sony 32X/8X/4X CD-R and Easy Cd Creator. Is there anything else I will need? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, KrispyKremer, the current Amazon deal is a little convoluted, but the bottom line is that you get a regular console set + $50 in accessories or games for $150. Since you *have* to buy a game or two to start anyway (or another controller + VMU) it's basically the same as getting the console for $100.

We love ours around here, even though my 6-yr-old son beats everyone else....:|

My $0.02.

Princer: The method that the pirate release groups use to rip data from gd-roms is something of a secret. I've heard that it may be some special hardware they have rigged up and I've also heard that there is a firmware for Yamaha cdr drive that can allow you to read it also. Your best bet would be trying to hunt down a copy of Sonic to download and burn.

princer, your only practical option for obtaining "backups" is to download ripped CDR versions of the games. You'll have to do some digging. If you know your way around the warez network, you should be able to locate the new releases with relative ease. Older titles are a bit more diffcult.

Well, if anyone was debating whether Seaman really is 10 dollars or not, it definately is. I received a nice notice that my game shipped yesterday. So, buy, buy, buy! Also, for anyone who seems to have weird credit card problems. I had a slight problem submitting my order. Interestingly, having West in my address caused it to come back as an error. However, W in place of West works fine. Had this problem on a number of other orders from various places. Most of them involved Webcertificate(this order was with a regular card) though and required that I actually had to alter my address for my webcertificate from West to W. Weird stuff.

Now, all I need is my Dreamcast. Should be under the tree in about a week.

Where can you find all these good prices? Call up Sega? Is there any online retailer that has 'em?

You can call them up or just go to sega.com and head into the store. Pull up any of the games on the list from the first post and the prices should be 9.95 or whatever.

/Rant on/

Okay guys, tell me if you really got Seaman for $9.95+shipping. I ordered mine via phone on 12/13, along with four other $9.95 games. The total came out to $58.85 with shipping and tax.

Now, I got confirmation e-mail from Sega Online store confirming my order was processed.....and they charged me $75.08!!!

Infuriated, I scroll down to the detail list and found Seaman being rung up at $24.95 instead of the promised $9.95!

Now, $24.95 is not a bad price considering the game comes with mic, but the only reason I was willing to try it was because of the $10 price. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered with it.

For those who ordered, tell me if they granted the $9.95 price for Seaman, shipped (and if you actually got it).

/Rant off/

First, I heard about this...problem. Second, I also heard that if the price was 9.95 when you ordered, Sega will honor the 9.95 price. You should call them up and explain this. My order went through just fine and is enroute via UPS. I checked my credit card and was charged the correct amounts. Here's the 2 receipts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seaman 1 DC UPS Standard Shipping $9.95

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sub Total: $9.95
Shipping Cost: $5.00
Taxes: $0.00

Total: $14.95

and here's the confirmation of shipping. Received a tracking number as well.

We thought youd like to know that we shipped your items today,
and that this completes your order.

Thanks for shopping at Sega.com, and we hope to see you again soon.

The following items were included in this shipment:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Qty Item Price Shipped Subtotal
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Seaman $9.95 1 $9.95
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Item Subtotal: $9.95
Shipping & Handling: $5.00
Tax: $0.00
Total: $14.95
---------------------------------------------------------------------
