new gaming build

Hi there,
I am in the research phase of a new gaming build. I generally keep a computer for 3 to 4 years before I pass it down to my wife for office work. My current system has an intel 1366 socket. So my upgrade path from there is limited. I am going to stick with an intel based processor. My question is should I upgrade to the newer 2011 socket board or go with the 1150 based board?

What are your current system specs? A lot of us are squeezing extra life out of the 1366 systems with the 6 core Westmere Xeons available for cheap on ebay. A X5650 CPU and a R9 290 or GTX 970 GPU will be good for another couple of years easily.

2011 isn't necessary for a gaming rig, but it may last longer than 1150 if future games make better use of multi core CPUs.

socket 2011 is now 2011X2 or version 2. There are new Intel CPU'S coming out soon, you may wish to wait a little while.
2011X2 is for multi GPU'S and lots of cores, kinda like a server. But my 2011 is still relevant.

Wait for a bit. The 1150 and 2011 sockets are near the end of their life cycle. It's always better to get in at the beginning of a socket instead of the end.

Throw an R9 290 or GTX 970 in there and rock on. Grab a X5650 off ebay for $65 and overclock it to 4Ghz if you have a good cooler.

That's the same upgrade I did last year from an i7 950 and GTX 460. My 5820K system isn't noticeably faster gaming.
