New Harddrive overheating

I just got a new WD Caviar 250gb used for storage purposes found here:

Anyways, I just formatted the drive and i hit a temp of 72C according to Speedfan. I let it cool off a bit, then I started transferring over files and I hit 82C. This seems pretty high to me seeing that my Primary Seagate 7200.9 hasn't ever hit over 42C even while transferring. Anybody know if that's safe? I really don't want all my files corrupted because it has happened in the past and made my life a living hell.

Um... There might be a reading error, but I'm not fully sure...

But I am sure HDD's are not supposed to really go past 45 C at tops... Put your hand around the HDD and see if its hot... Or touch it without getting static ... It should be hotter than your cpu if it's that hot...

Download HDTUNE and recheck the temp. Touch the top of the WD drive. Is it much hotter than the Seagate? Both drives should be within 10C if they are are getting the same amount of air flow. Nominal working temperature is between 30 and 40C. My Seagate rarely exceeds 31C with 25C room temp.

Touch the drive. 82C is scorching hot for a hard drive.

60C is prolly closer to max but check specs at seagate and get their appropriate tools to check just in case SF is wrong and running their diagnostics is likely required to arrange for a replacement under warranty anyway.
