New HD spinning constantly

So I recently got a new Seagate Barricuda in the mail. I have been trying to set it up to no avail. When I put it on an IDE card, it recognizes the drive but refuses to boot. When I touch the drive it is very hot to the touch and the whine of the motor is apparent.

I figured it might be the IDE card problem so I hooked it to an external encolsure and it does the same thing. My computer does not recognize the drive, it constantly spins, is very hot to the touch and the drive activity light on the enclosure stays lit.

I've tried different jumper settings and nothing seems to work. Is there something obvious that I'm missing or should I get on the phone with Seagate?

I'm guessing you're experienced with master and slave jumpering so the only advice I can really give is to try it in an entirely different machine and see if it works then. It does sound like a DOA drive to me though. Might want to try it directly connected to your motherboard, pulling out the ide cable for your optical drives if you have no spare ports to remove the possibility of 3rd party problems with the ide card and enclosure just to be sure too.

Sounds like a faulty drive - but have you tried it with a different cable? Have you tried it on CSEL? Also, examine your connector pins carefully with a good light and a magnifying glass. I had this happen a few years ago, and it was because one of the pins in the mobo connector got bent over somehow.

Oddly enough I switched out the jumper I was using and the heat and spinning problem is gone.

However, the drive still does not work.
