New HD

Replacing the HD in an emachines 600is. Which is better, Seagate or Western Digital.
I'll get an 80 g and it becomes the master with the old a temp. slave.

I've never had trouble with either brand, but seagate has a 5 year waranty vs. WD's 3 year waranty.

used 2 x western digitals, 1 x seagate, 1 of the WD's gave me problems, seagates barely. my vote goes to the seagate

Today you can go with either WD or Seagate. Hesitant for both because WD had bad history before and Seagate died on the 7200.8 series. Hitachi has been reliable with their 7K250 line.

everyone will tell you a different brand. i go with the one that has the longest warranty and is cheapest. i think seagate now. i have excellent luck and quiet drives from WD.

This response has always veried over the years, as no one maker stays on top all the time. But today, considering the 5 -year warranty and other factors - Seagate is the consensus winner. A few in this forum think they are noisy - but I don't find that to be the case. They all sound about the same. I have 4 Seagates in this system - 2 in a RAID1 array, and Ihave to look at the LEDs to know they are running.

After I buy this one and install as master.
, in Jan-March of next year, (when a debugged Vista SP2-3-4-5-etc) comes out; I plan to build a new machine with an ASUS 939 & AMD cpu. Will this hd be able to xfr to the new machine???

Get the one with the biggest warranty (probably Seagate in this case).

it will be but you'll just have to do a clean install (wipeout the hdd and reinstall programs). You can save your media files though

Shouldn't have to do that. Uninstall all your hardware-specific drivers and you should be fine. I was from, migrating from Socket A to 754.

If you assume hardware failure rates are the same across the board (which is the only assumption I would make, since anecdotal data is worthless and good data is unavailable), I would concentrate on warranty length. Most Seagates have five year warranties, and so do certain WD drives (the Raptor and their enterprise drives). After that, definitely use the standard price-performance-size metrics.

seagate has a better warrenty so i'd go with seagate. but i've never had trouble with either brand. just don't get a maxtor. those suck and are dying out.

Just found and ad for a Seagate 120g with 5yr, for 49.95 and it's right doen the street.
BUT!!! I had so much trouble with anything NORTON, which program should I use to xfr the old slave to the new drive???

I'm a "veteren Geek" on Geek .com, but that site has been taken over by Wills-PC"S (Wills website) & Everett Eddy, (Everette21). I no longer choose to deal there.

QUESTION:!!!
the emachines 600is, hangs the HD Vertically, and covers Three (3) bay slots.
Obviously I'll have to relocate the old HD to a temp new location AFTER I install the new Seagate, (Master/slave, until download is complete) I WILL NOT, keep the 5400 old hd connected as the ps is suspect.
My problem: All the IDE cable slots are used (CD PLAYER, CD BURNER, FLOPPY & HD)
What problems can I expect if I use a jumper IDE cable (1-male, 2 females) while xfring the data from slave to master???

you can buy a simple 2 port sata adapter card for 15 bucks at newegg
can get a 4 port one for like 20 bucks
the sata300 cards cost like 2-3x the price but performance is pretty much the same
you might consider that option if yur outta ide slots

the western digital WD2500YD is $76 (no rebate), has 5 years warranty, is cooler/quieter than the 7200.10 series. if the 7200.10 is cheaper, though, go with the seagate
