New HDD install issue

Had an issue with an older HD, so I went out and got a new Seagate ATA/100 drive. This is only a Master/Non-RAID setup. I have re-intstalled many times in the past, but it has been awhile.

Hooked in the new drive and went to boot from the WinXP Pro CD. I keep getting an error after startup that says:

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

I made sure I was booting off the CDROM in the BIOS, but I see no way to get around this message. I do not have a boot disk (Floppy) handy.

Any help would be appreciated.

make every CD-rom option part of your boot order. Don't have the hard drive even on the list. This sometimes cures the problem

I think I tried that. I am not at home atm to check. I may just even unhook the floppy as well. I never use it anyways. It was still trying to access the floppy even though the CDROM was the first boot option.

Did you make sure the HD was detected in the BIOS?

Tried a few things.

The CDROM is my first, second and third boot device in BIOS.
I disconnected my floppy drive.
I checked to make sure the HD was detected in the BIOS.
I checked my cables.

All OK. I am still getting the error.

Any ideas?

other than that i'd say sata drivers but it looks like you don't need em.

This might be really stupid...but its the only thing I can think of...its a non-pirated and the right CD for windows XP? Not one of the Service packs? Seems like your BIOS is not recognizing it as a boot disk. You could try to make a slipstreamed copy.

It is an official copy of WIN XP Pro.

The HD was detected in the BIOS.

Still having the same issues.

usual when this happens it isnt reading from the CDROM and it is just trying to load from the HD, or whatever it can get its hands on.

if you put boot from CDROM on all the options then its still going to error if it doesnt see the cdrom.

Issue solved.

My other CD-ROM drive (burner) was not plugged into a power source. Must have unhooked it when moving stuff around.

The main CD-ROM (DVD) was still hooked in, but I guess it was looking for both.

Sometimes the simplest things drive us nuts! But it is always a relief when it is a simple thing.
