New I7 system .. PSUless.

Hey guys.

So currently i'm building an intel i7 system. I'm very uneducated about PSU's and with the I7 being so new i'm finding it hard to find a review about a PSU that mentions it. I've read a ton of threads and checked out a couple kick arse websites and came back here to see how this PSU thread has seriously exploded with information so i figured i would ask you guys. I also had no idea THE jonnyguru ( love the page ) is a moderator here. Anyways... moving on.


Currently i've purchased these components:

processor:Intel i7 920 ( i plan on OCing )
Mobo: Asus P6t delux
ram: g.skill 3gb tri chan Model F3-12800CL9T-3GBNQ
HD: wd 640gb
soundcard: creative labs sound blaster pci-e x-fi titanium
video card: 4870x2 ( i plan to crossfire another one in the future when i make more than $10 a hour) haha...

I have around $200 left in my system budget for a psu. Suggestions please for the love of god!

Oh i also forgot to mention it HAS to be modular.

I also read the sticky'd thread but i don't believe it explained the difference between "certified" and "ready" for sli and crossfire, i may have just missed it.

Well PC power and cooling are from what i gathered an extremely good brand. Corsairs, i havn't heard much about there psus. How many watt's do you think would suffice?

I've found that i7 is very power hungry if you get all cores going. So ignore people that say "you only need a 500W to run a 4870x2".

That said, $200 will buy you a pretty damn adequate PSU for your rig. You only need a 650W or 800W.

I don't do suggestions... and I find that 99% of recommendations are fan boy based. That said, if you read jonnyGURU.com and HardOCP reviews, you KNOW what's good. So why come here for suggestions?

I don't know what's good! All the hardocp reviews say "HARD OCP FAIL!" at the end... and most of the review sites you would have to have an idea what you're buying to gain anything out of the review unless there is a recommendation section.

I wouldn't suggest Crossfiring 4870x2s. The scaling just isn't that good.

I see reading comprehension fail. This was just posted today with a PASS.

You can't just read their last five articles (minus the most recent one). Go back farther.

Alternately, find the modular PSUs that you can afford, and do a search (Google "xyz power supply site:jonnyguru.com" or something like that). If the review exists, you'll find it.

Also, so what's the difference between certified and ready?

The least you'll need is 2x6pin pci-e and 2x 8pin pci-e to power 2 HD4870X2's, and even if you smarten up and go with a HD4870X2 and a HD4870 (single) you still need 4 pci-e connectors. That's the least you can start basing your PSU on. Corsair 750tx has all those. Antec TPQ 850w has all those and is modular. For tri crossfire, or even qaudcrossfire, and with jonny saying i7 can get really powerhungry, I'd err on the side of caution, and go with something in the 800w range. Even better would be a antec signature 850w, not sure if it can be had for $200 or less though. And be sure to look up the reviews of the ones I mentioned !

Corsair TX750 for dual HD4870X2...no I wouldn't try that. you are essentially talking about 4 HD4870s there...most review I have read suggest the HD4870X2 uses more power than dual HD4870s.
Antec TPQ 1000W is under $200
OCZ EliteXstream 100W is around $200
Silverstone Olympia 1000-E which is similar to the OCZ is around $200
