I like the looks of the phone, but I wish they would leave out the damned camera.

Why?

I have a real camera. I don't need a half-assed POS camera adding to the cost of a cellphone when I will never use it.

its useful for getting quick and dirty pics for your phone contacts..

And of girls making out in random places where you don't have your camera (cough college humor cough)

My camera is smaller than that phone, and is 7+ megapixel. About the only places I wouldn't take it are places I wouldn't take my cellphone either.

Confirmed that Cingular (at&t) has a multi-year exclusive contract with Apple... so no other carriers will be getting Apple products for quite a while.

I think this answers just about every "speculation" we've had in this thread.

ANSWERS TO ALL YOUR QUESTIONS:
Can it be used with anything but Cingular? ?No.
Is it an ?unlocked? phone, so I can use it with a carrier other than Cingular? ?No.
Will there be a non-Cingular version? ?Not within the first two years.
Can I put my T-Mobile SIM card in it instead of Cingular? ?No.
But what if I keep asking? Then will it be available beyond Cingular? ?No.
Can it run Mac OS X programs? ?No.
Can I add new programs to it? ?No. Apple wants to control the look and feel and behavior of every aspect of the phone.
Does it run programs from Palm, Symbian, Windows? ?No.
Does it connect to iChat? ?No.
Does it have games? ?No.
Is it ambidextrous? ?No.
Does it have GPS? ?No.
Voice recognition? Voice dialing? Voice memos? ?No, although this could change by June when the phone ships.
Does it get onto the HSDPA (3G) high-speed Internet network that Cingular has rolled out in a few cities? ?No. But Steve Jobs said a later version of the iPhone will ? once there?s enough HSDPA coverage in this country to justify it.
Does the Web browser support Flash or Java? ?No.
Will it play music over Bluetooth? ?Unknown.
Can you change the battery yourself? ?No. You?ll have to send the phone in to Apple for battery replacement, just as with the iPods.
Can it open Word and Excel documents? ?No. (Steve Jobs says it can open PDF files, though.)
Can you use it one-handed? ?Yes, for some functions. But overall, it?s less convenient than on a phone with physical keys.
Can I make a call while driving a car? ?Not as easily as on a regular cellphone with programmed speed-dial keys. (Besides?MUST you?)
Does the camera record video? ?Not yet. Apple may add this feature by June.
Does it connect to standard iPod accessories like car docks and speaker systems? ?Yes!
Does it work overseas? ?Yes. It?s a quad-band GSM phone, meaning you can use it in almost any country (for an added fee, of course).
Is there a Verizon version? ?NO!!!!
Will they make a non-cellphone version?a widescreen touch iPod? ?Nobody knows. Apple doesn?t leak product info until it?s good and ready.
That scrolling through lists thing is glitzy, but what if I have 3,000 names in my address book? ?There?s also an alphabet ?index tab? down the right side of the screen, so you can jump to another spot in the list.
Is there a calendar? ?Yes.
Will it sync with Outlook? ?No.
What about airplane use? ?It has a airplane mode (wireless off), just like any cellphone.
Won?t the screen get smudgy? ?It does, but you don?t see it except when the screen is off. The one I played with was pretty streaky, but wiping it on my sleeve cleaned it completely.
Who on earth would buy this thing? ?Obviously not people who ask this question. But that?s OK?there?s no requirement that everyone buy the iPhone. More for the rest of us!

Damn, and to think some crazies were predicting the end of RIM, MS and Palm. With a phone like this coming out 6 months from now, I doubt they have too much to worry about.

But it?s not like the walled garden has gone away. ?You don?t want your phone to be an open platform,? meaning that anyone can write applications for it and potentially gum up the provider's network, says Jobs. ?You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesn?t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.?

That's gotta be the most spectacular piece of bullshit to come out of that man's mouth.

Yeah...that kind of kills it for ya doesn't it? No GPS? With all that crap crammed in there, there's no GPS? Every phone I've seen nowadays has GPS, even my v710 which is like 2 years old (not navigation but GPS). I can also understand the non-user-replaceable battery, but no Word/Office docs? That's what half of my email is lol. I wonder how easily it will fit in my pocket, too - I'm not a big fan of having a case on my belt to carry around my phone in. Hmm....

imagine trying to use Safari on that!

I don't need all the gizmos. But if they came out with an ipod nano looking phone, that would be cool. The iPhone is more of a PDA than a phone.

Yeah, good ol' Steve was caught knee deep in it there! PDA phones running user programmable platforms like Windows Mobile and Palm OS have been out for years now, and there has never been a virus or worm released capable of bring down a single tower let alone half of the national network.

Anyway, I believe that was Apple PR speak for "We don't want people hacking the phone to share DRM'ed content over WiFi". Saying that wouldn't be as "cool", though... Steve doesn't want to look like he's in the back pocket of the media industry.

500 for a half implemented pile of trash that looks great. I am sure that most mac fans are ready to gobble it up, they have history doing so.

I'm sure that Paris Hilton will be sporting one as well. Hell... She probably won't even need to pay for hers, since Apple will give her a freebie for the publicity.

Sign me up for round 2, baby!

This is what I'm waiting for. I have owned several Macs over the last 20 years, and one thing you NEVER do is buy 1st gen Apple hardware.

Of course there will be a vibrate option.

Lets hope so. That would possibly be a deal killer for me. I don't like my phones to ring.

The lack of replacing a battery on a phone is worrying seeing as the battery life on my 3rd gen iPod is only 'okay' now.

The 16hrs of music with the phone turned off is also poor. WHO turns a phone off to get more hrs of music out of it?! Lets see how it does with the phone portion turned on also. It should be okay though.

I agree, Vibrate mode is on the top of my features list...I hate having the ringer go off when I'm in a meeting, having dinner, etc.

Just out of curiousity where does it say when the phone is turned off for the 16 hours? 16 hours of music playing is what has been said. Nothing about the phone being turned on or off. I checked Apples site just to make sure. Nothing. So this is a big assumption at this point. I imagine Apple would have given a disclaimer if this was the case, as they mention 5 hours depends on network configuration for talk time as well.

16 hours is far from poor. THe Nano tops out at 24 and the iPod at 14. Considering what is in the iPhone I would say 16 for straight audio playback is pretty good.

Plus it is assumed that most people will be doing a mix of things, thus it will vary so no one will ever get the full 16 unless you only play music on it.

The button on the side is for ringer/silent mode. I can only imagine silent means vibrate as that is usually what it means.

I think I read the 16hrs was with the phone turned off. I think it was in the keynote? Sorry can't remember where it was from. If it is like that it is no way to get 16hrs!

Silent could put it in a no volume for the ringtone. But I'm definately hoping it has a vibrate function as that would suck.

It will be a lot better when a full specification list is out posted by Apple
