Honestly, without the interface, it's really not any better than a smartphone to me. The interface looks amazing (slide to zoom on photos/etc) and I'm sure it's covered by Apple patents.Originally posted by: AnyMal
On the other hand, I'm sure that Nokia and SE are not going to just sit and wait til Q4 of this year, they will probably roll out their direct competing models by the, so in the end, we may see some very very interesting models come next holiday season.

In the UK at least phones are subsidies as well.... and AFAIK smart phones aren't $500, altohugh I haven't paid a huge amount of attention to things recently.Originally posted by: AnyMal

I pass.
How stupid of Apple. They could deb-brand the thing in terms of Cingular and open it up to the world market. Cingular doesn't exist outside of the USA.
How big is the Ipod market in Asia? The last time I was in HK, they didn't really subsidize their phones. People usually buy them debranded/unlocked.
We can also put the price in perspective. The original 5GB iPod was $499.00 and we know how people responded. In all truth, $500 is about what you'd pay for an unsubsidized smartphone oversees, so we can speculate that it'd sell well.

Jobs even made it a point to say that they had patented much of the interface and would protect those patents in the keynote.
They're going to have to either find a loophole in Apple's patents, or copy them and fight Apple in court if they want to have a similar device.

My SLVR was free with a contract extension, I don't see people paying through the roof for the iPod phone when you can get a seperate iPod instead and a free phone.

Wow... and they said RIMM stock was overhyped. I have to ask, what kind of e-mail services does it provide, ie, push or pull? Oh, and good luck getting this to work with Microsoft's ActiveSync technology or BlackBerry's service.

I carry a $200 iPod and just purchased a $300 phone, so $500 for this isn't that outrageous. My belt has my work Blackberry and my pocket carries my personal phone and I keep my iPod in my briefcase. If I can start to de-gadgetize the number of items I have to carry, thumbs up from me!

it SAYS it can work with "most" poopular web-based mail and supports pop3. since it has connectivity options (blue tooth, wired, etc), theres no reason someone cant write a simple interface to Sync it up with popular organizational software

My stance. Ive got a PDA for PDA & GPS. Got a phone. Got an Ipod hardwired to the car that sometimes hook up to the work desk. I can combine the Phone & GPS & PDA with a Smartphone, but that still leaves the Ipod standalone.
Ipod has better sound quality than other devices, and more storage. And I have full integration with my car.. so theres no replacing that yet
Apple is only releasing 4gb and 8gb because they can. people will buy it. they will then release it in 20gb+ and the same people will buy it again.

OP, it's a shame you can't perform sexual favors via PM. Seems you so desperately want to...
