This stuff is getting ridiculous. Do you people really not have the vision to see the work and tech advances here? Stop being so blinded by your hate for Apple folks. I like Apple, I won't deny it. But they give me reasons to. They constantly are trying to make technology better, while everyone else pushes the same crap. Get over yourselves and get back to loving technology and being able to commend a company for making something great. Of course the iPhone isn't perfect, and wont meet everyones needs. Heck the lack of 3G bugs me, but again it is coming. If not in this round the next.

I wish I was on Apples payroll, heck I wish i could work for Apple and not get paid.
I'll repeat myself. Why do you get to point out things you don't like (lack of 3G) about it while the rest of us can't? As I said, this has been a civil thread with lots of pro & con discussion, with limited exceptions. I don't see what you're getting so hyped up about.

I like Apple stuff too, but I know better than to overpay for a brand new Apple product that's likely to have a bunch of problems. I'll let the fanboys like you finish debugging this product for me, and then I'll pick one up 18 months later with a much lower price and additional storage. Thanks guys!

I don't think it has been limited exceptions. I don't care if you point out the lack of 3G or anything else, but making it sound like it is the worst device to every hit the earth is ridiculous. And not acknowledging the tech that has gone into this is ridiculous. Which most of you are not doing. I am simply trying to remind everyone that the device is not out and thus not final. And all the speculation and misinformation is quite annoying.

Do you really think a company as big as Apple wouldn't have all of their ducks in a row when it came to something like that?

You're doing the same speculating though... and that's really the whole point of all this anyway

regardless, the big reason people are honed in on the limititations... they are things that have been out by competitors already. today. you can simply argue that no one has the UI that apple has, but it has yet to be proven. And I hope it does succeed, I can then get my iPhone nano... but I doubt it, since I'll be sticking w/ verizon for the foreseeable future. Their phones suck, but well, free calls really does balance it out.

I don't think anyone is denying it's pretty damn neat... but at it's current pricing and commitment, it is an uphill battle.

Hmm. As a liker of Apple stuff you should know that prices don't drop all that much.

Apples pricing isnt dynamic likes cingulars with phones or say dells. They will simply replace the current iPhone with a 3G iPhone or whatever and keep the price the same for a long while.

Overtime the price may fall. But much lower? I think not. More features? Of course. But in 18 months, the iPhone will still be going for $400 and $500 for the current version of it. If not still at the same prices it is today.

It took the iPod how many years to come down to $250? 6 years.

Same thing with the Macs. C2D is out, yet the Mini remains at the same pricing. This is how Apples pricing has always been and I wouldnt expect that to change.

I don't intend to defend or bash this model. All I know is it keeps the resale of my things up. Which I like.

How profound. I may like Apple. But above all I enjoy technology and I enjoy when advancements are made and a company dares to change.

I may be speculating but on accurate information. 3G is coming, it may come before it releases who knows. All the other things, battery etc. Is unknown yet everyone seems quick to jump on the nay sayer bandwagon for the sake of bashing an Apple product.

Please tell me what other companies have already that Apple doesn't here. Besides 3G.

I have heard people saying this, but havent seen anything to back it up yet.

And you think you're being reasonable with this? What fun would it be if we can't speculate about future products? You're basically saying shut up and praise Jobs. C'mon man, that's just lame. I may not have said it's awesome in every one of my posts....but, uh, it's pretty obvious. It's slick, sexy, has a gorgeous screen and interface. These things just go without saying. It's the finer details that everyone is interested in now.

My main beef with Apple is the choice of going with one carrier. I personally despise GSM service-if Apple really wanted to make some money they'd have spent a little more to go cross carrier. Every person I've sold a cingular phone to has come back with complaints. I won't disregard the carrier because of the phone.

Okay, so what revolutionary new technology is Apple introducing with this phone?

Sorry, I'm not buying that argument. When Apple products are grossly overpriced (like this one!), the prices often drop like a rock after the release date. Take the iPod Photo for example... The 60 GB model was $599 in November of 2004, but was dropped to $449 just four months later. They also released a $349 30 GB iPod Photo replacing the $499 40 GB model at the same time, which is the one that I got.

The Mac Mini was the same way... The original Mac Mini was about $1,000 when fully loaded with WiFi, Bluetooth, a SuperDrive and extra memory when it was released, but that same model was only $700 six months later. Guess when I decided to buy mine

Don't get me wrong, i love apple and i love their advances, but they do such stupid sh*t with the basic stuff (i.e. no removable batteries for ipods) that just boggle the mind. I mean they could almost have the perfect devices if they didn't do that sh*t. It makes absolutely no sense.

Please tell me what other companies have already that Apple doesn't here. Besides 3G.

I have heard people saying this, but havent seen anything to back it up yet.

How about we start with the most basic of things -

Replaceable battery
Expandable storage
3rd party programs

They also have interfaces you can use in your pocket. One of the reasons I don't dig ipods all too much.

The demoed iPhone interface LOOKS nice. It looks amazing. It also looks like a pain in the ass to use. Simple, very simple to use - granted, but there is no way in the world I'd ever get a phone that I'd have to poke with a finger to use. I refuse to use styluses as well. In fact, the entire concept of a touchscreen is terrible to me.

You know what phone has the best, most usable interface I've ever used, and is also simple to use? The sidekick. Using a sidekick is effortless, responsive and convenient. It's so well thought out, and puts palm and windows mobile to absolute shame. The keyboard was nice and big, and the sliding screen is brilliant.

Sure, its limited in it's capabilities, but so is the iPhone. I'd like the interface to look nice, but that has to come second to functionality.

The single most important factor in a smartphone is how intuitive it is to use. How fast it lets you do the things you want to do, so you can put it away. Otherwise, it's a toy you play around with at home, and never use outside.

The features this phone has are more than any smartphone on the market right now. You are simply an Apple basher/hater to say otherwise.

No, what you don't seem to get is that there are a huge number of features other manufacturers have been offering for a long time which this phone doesn't have. You're just consumed by the UI, but that won't get you push email, wireless sync, better security, GPS, etc etc.

1. Push email is there from yahoo. If you would simply look, you would know this.

2. Wireless sync is neither confirmed nor denied by Apple. There is no reason it shouldn't. It may only be for contacts, etc if going over BT.

3. What security do you have in mind?

4. GPS is neither confirmed nor denied. Jobs said "it knows where you are" in the keynote. It may be something that is not complete. What phones has functional GPS now? That integrate with a direcions/mapping system, in the US of course. Asia has had it for some time I know.

5. Etc, etc? What else do you want? List them. There will always be an etc etc.

Consumed by the UI? Would you rather use the same tired smartphone crap everyone else has done time and time again? I have a Treo 650, i know how tedious it is. Especially browsing the web. My Treo can't conference call or recieve HTML email.

No other phone does music and video as well as the iPhone is proposed to do.

I get your point. There are things the iPhone could have that it doesn't. I acknowledged hat in my longer post. But most of the things people are whining about have not been confirmed. Plus there is still 6 months for Apple to add more functionality to the iPhone.

I am all about waiting to use it before I say it is great. The difference and exciting portion here is the innovation. Instead of using the same tired interface they did something new with the smartphone idea.

What sickens me is that many people are blinded by their Apple hate to see that. This is how leaps are made. Not by making the same tired garbage in a slightly modified housing.

It is pretty clear and undeniable that this device will continue to get better and better as you can see Apple has the ability to innovate and also the passion and the will. With that in my mind, you will get better products from them than from Rim, Palm, Moto, etc who have been making the same crap over and over again.

As a technology enthusiast this is what excites me. A company that is willing to move forward and make exciting fun products that are useful and practical. You should watch the keynote and see how passionate and excited he was about this thing. Of course he wants to sell it, but I know all of you that love technology have felt that way about something whether you created it or not.

1. IMAP is not push email. Hell, even Jobs' slide on the presentation had "push" in quotes! Anybody with more than the occasional email will be unsatisfied.

2. We're not talking garden variety BT, but real OTA sync. Its not that its not confirmed, its that Apple doesn't have it. Nor can they have it without getting into some serious patent trouble or scooping up one of the smaller companies that have this tech (seven, visto - similar to what Moto did).

3. I'll use the Blackberry as an example - it can be a very secure solution (PGP, SMIME, BB Smart Card reader) along with the backend infrastructure that encrypts everything. Apart from that the device can be locked down pretty tightly, can be killed remotely if needed etc. This is the main reason why the government sales make up a large % of RIM's sales.

4. They're not going to keep such a major piece hidden just for the hell of it. And while google maps may be nice, its been available on other phones for quite some time.

The rest of your post is mostly trash.

First, "same tired smartphone", "same tired garbage"? Riiight. Companies spend tons of money making their keypads better and more ergonomic, and people make decisions based on that alone. According to you (and not because you've used it, but because Steve Jobs says so) pressing a flat surface is infinitely better. You'll excuse me if I'm sceptical.

Second, if you think they'll be adding new functionality in the next 6 months it means you have absolutely no clue how software development works. If they've probably already reached dcut and are now in beta testing.

Thirdly, you've so enchanted by this new UI that you think anybody who isn't ecstatic over this is some crazy hater.

My recommendations? Calm down

Definitely, a smartphone should always before function over form. Actual keyboard >>> touchscreen keyboard.

You're doing the same speculating though... and that's really the whole point of all this anyway

regardless, the big reason people are honed in on the limititations... they are things that have been out by competitors already. today. you can simply argue that no one has the UI that apple has, but it has yet to be proven. I thought it was already confirmed no user replacable battery? Apple history points to no as well. I hope that apple changes this, but I just don't see it happening.

As already noted, office/exchange support. this can change in 6 months, but it really is a selling point if apple wants to break business. altho, this may not be the case that apple wants.. they are only shooting for 1%.

3rd party support. as of now, nothing. this was stated by a VP. yes, it can change, but as of now no.

The screen is another huge issue.. something apple does have over the competition.. but will it be it's achilles heel?

And hence the problem with products that aren't out yet. It will be debated until it's released. Don't get me wrong, I think it's cool and great (albeit expensive) but there are systems set in place already for what's out there now. I don't know if apple can break into that easily.

The way I see it - if you could use it one handed, or two thumbed, he certainly would have. The fact that he only used it two handed pecking style tells me that is the only feasible way to do it.

He used one hand, so he could keep it with the camera. He didnt try to type with two.

And all the speculation and misinformation is quite annoying.

I thought it was already confirmed no user replacable battery? Apple history points to no as well. I hope that apple changes this, but I just don't see it happening.

BS. He talked about how it's "so much faster" to type with it compared to a thumboard. "The camera" was a direct feed from the screen, he could have covered the entire screen if he felt like it and people would have been able to see. Then he went hunting and pecking with one finger, and it was definitely not faster or easier from the looks of it. If he wanted to prove it was so much faster, or at least as fast, he would have two thumbed it and shown us all.

The only thing he convinced me of is that apple is capable of making beautiful UIs, and coming up with a few neat unique features, and then completely throwing it all away by making the rest of their stuff annoying to actually *use* on a day to day basis.

He talked about how great it was that it runs desktop class apps, but what he was showing obviously wasnt desktop class. Safari took FOREVER to load a page.

It's form over function, like every other apple product. It looks nice, and an absolute blithering idiot can use it. But if you ever have the desire to do a little something more, you'll probably have to look elsewhere.

Calm down

I am completely calm. My feelings dont revolve around whether or not you like this product. I don't know if it better to use. Until I can try I have no idea. But I like the sound of it and I like what they are doing, not just with the interface.

I like it as of now. We will see what happens when it comes out.

And I am not the only one who thinks they will be adding more in the next 6 months. Whose to say they told use everything they working on? Besides it wasn't even about software development I was speaking mainly about the hardware, 3G for instance.

Considering it is built on OS X or is OS X them tweaking the software with an update wouldnt be hard, now or later. Ever heard of program updates?

Neutralizer: Replaceable battery is unconfirmed. And as I said there is a sim slot somewhere which may also be where the battery is. Its fine if you want to believe it wont have it. But using it as a con is unfair.

Expandable storage? It doesnt need expandable storage. It has 4 and 8GB. Phones now have what, 60MB? How you can lump them together is beyond or how you could even consider the addition of an SD slot a feature because they are too cheap to throw a decent amount of storage in there is beyond me. To each their own though.

3rd party programs. This is Engadgets assumption at this point. Considering it is OS X, I imagine 3rd party are possible and will arrive on iPhone. Albeit under the close watch of Apple. But I don't know and that might not be the case.

My problem here is the misinformation and assumptions bases on that misinformation. We don't have every detail right now. Speculating is fine. But to beat down on Apple because of some unconfirmed rumors is silly.

It is fine if you want to say "No user replaceable battery would be a stupid move" but saying "There is no user replaceable battery therefore it is crap and lightyears behind what smartphones today have."

See the difference? I am speculating of course, but no one knows what is in store.

So I would return with maybe a calm down for everyone else?

The only reason I mentioned the replaceable battery confirmed or unconfirmed is that historically, apple has always sacrificed the replaceable battery part for form, to maintain their sleek ethos.

I think the major con is that the touchscreen keyboard doesn't seem to be very fast. Why don't you address that concern?

Lack of 3G kills it. Apple should have also supported CDMA networks, why only release it on GSM. Sprint and Verizon 3G networks are currently the fastest with the lowest latency.

This is clearly a preference standpoint. People say OS X is worthless and just looks good. However my productivity is much better in OS X than in Windows.

I am not saying the phone will be better than my current Treo. But no one knows what it is like yet.

Why he didnt two thumb it, I dont know. But you called bull on my statement then you try and turn it around with "why didnt he show us all?" I thought he was two fingering it? Which is it?

He had a camera on the actual phone when he was typing. There was a direct feed and there was a camera watching his movements as well. When he was typing he used on finger not two. Why I dont know. Will it be faster, I dont know.

It would take getting used to I am sure. But til you use it reserve your opinions of it. Just as I am.
