Yep, it's definitely expensive, but that's to be expected of a product like this. In a year's time, they make a regular iPhone without the iPod integration, and it'll be much, much cheaper. That'll be the one I wait for (if I was to wait, anyway).

I wish the resolution wasn't so low. Moving up to a 640x480 PDA has ruined me for anything else. Lack of 3G is also very disappointing.

Why are people talking about this phone being expensive and overpriced when they have no clue what the hell they are talking about?

Pretty much all PDA phones(different from smartphones) cost $499 to $599 when they are released WITH a 2 year contract.

Now to explain the difference between a PDA phone and a smartphone, the smartphones have no touchscreens, lower specs and the OS is quite a bit crippled and most things take an extra 2-4 steps to do compared to the pda edition.

Here are the prices of some PDA phones at release with a 2 year contract:

Treo 600: $599
Treo 650: $599
Treo 700p/w/wx: $499-599
Treo 750: $499
All the HTC carrier branded models: $399-599
Samsung i830: $699

All of the above phones come with a MAX of 128 mb of flash storage, most with 64 mb... I own all of these phones btw, and not only are they overpriced, but they are complete jokes. I'm currently using the Treo 700wx because it's "the best" at being a pda/phone, but definitely not what i'd call an ideal solution.

We're definitely getting a lot better specs for our money with the iphone compared to say my crappy Treo... So please people stop talking out your asses when you don't have the faintest idea of the prices in the high end phone market. This is meant to compete in the high end pda phone price points of the Treo's etc of the world and not your entry level Q and Blackjack smartphones...

At $499 with 4 gigs of flash and a 3.5 inch high res widescreen, IS a steal compared to the $499 we currently pay for a treo with 128 mb of flash and a crappy 240x240 2.5 inch screen.

I can't wait till the transcribers start to break, and people can't place a phone call! And people will want to replace their battery, and not crash constantly!! Not to mention that Cingular has one of the SLOWEST wanna be wireless connections on a cellular network!!! Sprint is #1 with EVDO rev A, Verizon #2 with EVDO 1x and then 60 miles behind in 3rd place in Cingular (look it up, dont take my word for it!)

/refuse to own any thing Apple makes!

The high-end PDA phones might retail for $500, but most of them have big discounts if you order them with a 2 year contract. A $500 phone discounted to $300 at purchase time is still a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a $600 iPhone with no discount at all.

Yeah - my point is that they CAN easily make it 20gb+ , but they dont have to and thus dont want to.

IF it had such capacity, id buy it instantly. i wonder if they have SD slots, though....

I pass.

How stupid of Apple. They could deb-brand the thing in terms of Cingular and open it up to the world market. Cingular doesn't exist outside of the USA.

Which is why they didn't use Verizon.

Cingular uses GSM, a world technology.

Problem is that GSM is a horrible technology compared to CDMA.

The internet features on the iphone will be slow because cingular has no real network.

If they didn't sign a contract with cingular and decided to go cross carrier they may have had a chance.

I'll take the old 6700 over the iphone (EVDO destroys the gsm data network)

Those prices are high, especially with a contract, but I still get your point.

Fixed.

I love their dropped calls commercials. All my friends who have Cingular (in NY and Chicago) say they get terrible service. Of course Cingular has the fewest dropped calls; it is hard to drop calls when you can't make one to begin with.

Apple is changing it's corporate ID - new number and new name-it will now be Apple Inc..

This is because they couldn't invest enough money to build a decent cellular network to support their phone. They chose the carrier with the least robust network because it was the least expensive contract to use a carrier.

NPR had an insider that said they wouldn't release the phone unless they build a new cell network because 'that's how apple works'. I laughed hard when I hear that!

They'll make money on the phones-but only because they pay chinese laborers 20c a day to make them *S*

Read my post again, those prices ARE WITH a 2 year contract at RELEASE, so a treo WILL cost you 499 with contract at release time just like this iphone and it sure as hell won't come with 4 gigs of storage and an integrated ipod.
