fwiw - a little research shows that the house was built and sold in 2006 for $600k. It's a foreclosure and the current appraised value is $400k(which is what was used to calculate the property tax). Property taxes in Lawnside(pop of <3k) is an outstanding $4.484 per $100

Not much left for the individual after you take out federal income tax, federal medicare, social security, state income tax, local income tax, sales tax, etc. Is it any wonder people are so ticked off at their elected leaders?

When I was looking at houses in various areas of central NJ the taxes were always in the vicinity of 1.5-2%. Also, most households qualify for a homestead tax credit of ~$1000.

Our total tax burden is higher than average because we subsidize all of the red states where people bitch and moan about welfare without realizing that they benefit from it.

So, you think Buffet's average employee pays $26k in property tax every year?

And of course he pays a lower percentage (but a lot more in raw dollars), he's paying a totally different tax than his employees. That's just how the system works.

I think their point is the system is not working when someone who makes as much as Buffet can pay a lower percentage of his income in taxes compared to his Secretary.

That's what you get for promoting Federalism. Once you make social welfare a Federal issue it's only natural low population states will have disproportionate representation on that money with 2 senators. Who's more powerful per capita? NJ with two or WY with two votes.

That's really generous of the people of New Jersey. Presumably if they had a problem with giving their hard earned money to people in other states, just because the people in those states would rather not pay taxes themselves, then the people of New Jersey would lower their taxes. Thanks New Jersey!

LOL

Blue states are fools who have seen nothing yet. Wait until their pensioners take 100% of their taxes and leave zero for current services. That house wont be worth $5. (PITA to strip copper wiring with drywall/insulation up)

<smarmy tax-leeching commie>If you don't like it, move.</smarmy tax-leeching commie>

But srsly, the only way money-hungry politicians are going to learn a lesson about over-taxation and over-spending is if those getting fucked move to a less wallet-fucking state.
Dumb is as dumb does.

story doesn't add up.
if true, everyone leaves, no taxes...problem solved.
people are, in fact, leaving.

other people stay and suck it up because of family, friends, work, etc.

I can't find it on google, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that Jersey was one of the top states in terms of people going to college out of state and not coming back.

Makes a lot more sense, it's a 600k tax value foreclosed and trying to get rid of it for $275k.

But damn $4.484/100?!?!?! That's insane.

i'm sure there are plenty of reasons to leave. that part of the country is filled with places to live. but i don't think new grads are paying 18k tax bills. never mind the average jersey joe. story doesn't jive

Are you flipping kidding me? Sheesh!

Our 3-bedroom, ~1900 sq ft house is worth $174k and we pay just $1,800 in property taxes.

Remind me to never move up north D:

Twas nice being a clueless kid... those were the days.

He was talking about "percent" of tax, not the amount. Warren's secretary paid over 30% tax a few years ago when Warren's tax rate was 17.xx%....because of the max 15% capital gains tax (which were the majority of his earnings). Her max tax rate was much higher because she had regular income (just over $70,000 IIRC compared to his billion + )

Back to the OP...that's pitiful. I wouldn't stay in a shit hole like that (tax wise). Do not want.

Every time we have one of these threads, it's full of the same butthurt NJans with the same tired old arguments. It must make them feel better after the anal rapeage their state and municipalities give them.

At least one person familiar with the area has mentioned that lawnside is a pretty lousy area. My bet is that the average property has a low value so the property taxes for the town need to be relatively high as a percentage of the assessed value to get enough money to cover the town's costs.

Really doesn't matter if the house is actually worth more....even at 600k, or even if it's worth a million, there shouldn't be 18k of property tax. That is simply ridiculous.

Wonder what kind of "government services" the people there get for that rate?

Admittedly New Jersey is at the bottom of this list at $0.61 received per $1.00 paid, but Nevada is only four cents higher despite having one of the lowest tax burdens in the nation. Over-generalization is overly general.

Is there a newer version of that? I'm curious as to what Mississippi's looks like in a year when it doesn't get partially obliterated by a hurricane.

As for property taxes, I think we need to abolish them. If a person can pay off the loan on a property and then be forced to give it up if they don't pay taxes on it, they don't really own it. They're just leasing it from the governement.

Wow, that's kind of a shitty town too. My family still lives in south jersey and pays out the ass on property taxes. Not sure why they still do it - they've been talking about moving for years now.

I pay about 1% in Arlington, VA.
