"August 4, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the next major downloadable content (DLC) update for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead (L4D), the #1 new game title on Xbox 360 and PC in 2008

Entitled "Crash Course," the latest DLC delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms. Targeted for release in September, "Crash Course" bridges the gap between the end of the "No Mercy" campaign and the beginning of "Death Toll" in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale

While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of "Crash" is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

"Since the release of Left 4 Dead last November, the design team has been excited about creating new experiences for this world and allowing players to do the same, by releasing much of our internal toolset, like the Survival Pack and Authoring Tools," said Gabe Newell. "We're working with the fans toward the ongoing entertainment value of the product."

Left 4 Dead is an action horror game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 50 industry awards from outlets around the world and sold almost 3 million copies worldwide.

Left 4 Dead: Crash Course is targeted for release in September and will be available free of charge on the PC and for 560 Gamer points on Xbox Live.

So essentially we're getting a 30 minute campaign/versus map? Not bad I guess, but I was hoping we'd get a full new campaign after all this time.

Yeah, they definitely word it in a way to try and put a positive spin on it only being 30 minutes.

Seems like we've waited long enough that it should just be a full campaign at this point.

Pfft, and it's free, I mean, what's up with that? They should start paying ME to play their games if they take this long to put something out....Hell, I'll probably just pirate it, that'll teach em to take so long to put out free content...

What's funny is I'm still going to buy L4D2 because it's the best game I've played in so long....

You must have a pretty low standard of games.

i've played free mods that held up to repeat play better than L4D.

hell, all the old half-life mods like counter-strike, day of defeat, action half-life, whatever, seemed to have at least as much content.

Here, read that and then you'll understand. Before L4D's release, Valve promised fans they would be releasing additional content just like they did (and continue to do) for Team Fortress 2. This promise was the deciding factor that led to me (and many others) purchasing the game. After a whole year and all they have to show is a 30 minute campaign? That's nothing compared to what they've done with TF2 since its release.

So yeah, I'm glad they're finally giving us something. But that doesn't change the fact that they went back on their word.

Thats the kind of thing we should have been getting once a month for free since it came out.

One reason why RTS's have an advantage. If you dont like the official stuff or want more, you can easily find it.
Actually, UT is like that too now that I think about it.l

They did release an SDK after about 6 months, so there should be custom content coming eventually.

I bet this is just a publicity thing so they can release part two and when people whine they can point at this.

While it would be nice if it was a full campaign, I'm not on the "boycott L4D2" bandwagon by any means, and I'll still be buying L4D2 day one.

Most campaigns are chock full of shitty levels that are a waste of time anyways. If this one has two or three really good levels then it wouldn't be that bad.

thirty minutes means one map, since iirc they said each campaign in the original l4d was multiple hours.

I wouldn't mind a 30 minute versus game, it'd have to be pretty intense for the Infected to have any chance of winning. I'm glad they're still releasing stuff, I don't mind the sequel coming so soon as long as they keep putting out stuff for the original.

The 30 minutes limit is good, it's pretty much the amount of time it usually takes in most public games to have both teams decimated by rage-quitting.

Itll likely be 30 minutes for noobs who wander around slowly exploring every single room, edging forward painfully slowly.

Still im glad theres something new coming out for this.

I love how people can complain about GETTING free content and then act like they DESERVE monthly updates that rival this particular release. If you came to my office and asked me to work for you for free I'd tell you to go fuck yourself. People should be happy they get ANY free content after retail. I don't care if they promised you tons of free content and a free hooker every month... they have no obligation to provide you such.

They have no Obligation to provide it, but we have no Obligation to buy new games from them.

I'm done with L4D. I sure as hell won't be buying L4D2 at full price, that's for sure.

L4D has a lack of variety that I just simply can't stomach anymore. Versus games usually use the same tactics and rules over and over again. There's little room to strategize and mix things up, otherwise you're screwed. I can stomach repetition in other FPS deathmatch style games... at least there you have room for strategy.

Lack of weapons (which isn't really fixed L4D2... just new weapons and few melee, meh) and overly long versus campaigns top my list of complaints with L4D2. I guess the new DLC will help with my second point, but not much. Versus campaigns should be shortened, not kept the same length as the regular campaign. The regular campaign is supposed to have this long progression, the versus shouldn't. What's worse is you have to sit through the entire thing twice, as if once wasn't bad enough.

I had enough of this game. I haven't put the same amount of hours in this game as many of you, but eh, more power to you. I'm just a little bitter that I was suckered into paying full price for this game and didn't get at all what I expected. The campaign was fun to do with friends, but those were one time things. Versus was fun the first few times, but got old real fast. Survival was cool too I guess, but something was missing. There was no point in doing the survival mode again if you already got times on them. There just needed to be more variety for me, and this DLC isn't doing a whole lot for me.
