It's been a while since I read the book (2016ish?), but the Trisolarans were never friendly. The rest of your spoiler sounds about right, though.well .. i read the Wikipedia pages for the book, the original chinese tv show, and i watched the Netflix remake.
I think they are decently faithful at least to the core of the story. There are minor differences, the probe doesn't exist in the book, the events are more compressed towards the end of the book but are otherwise the same, the ETO is less prominent in the Netflix show.
i'm on E05 of The Three Body Problem and the show has gotten better... which is something i wasn't expecting. The story now makes sense, the characters have clear goals, although there's still mystery involved, the plot has actually moved along, and the show doesnt waste time on bullshit side-character stuff.
I can't recall seeing anything Chinese that left an impression on me. What they consider "acting" seems to me to be "overacting". Same thing with Korean stuff except they are very adept at creating interesting/extraordinary situations that pound you emotionally.I'm really annoyed they wiped out all the Chinese characters, and cultural backdrop other than the Maoist era flashbacks, to make everyone British.
I guess the Chinese Donghua (anime) is much more faithfulJust wait...
Managed to binge the series mostly. Definitely some strong points (ie when they are sticking to the books), but also wandering into pointless side stories/personal drama that bogs everything down.
Imo, they reveal the mysteries too fast, but linger on the interpersonal relationships of 5 gen Zers when it's supposed to be an species level crises played out over centuries.

"But they are British POCs, so it's international and diverse!"
No, you just gutted a big part of what made the novels fascinating. I don't need to "see myself" in something to enjoy it. In fact, the different perspective is what contributed to making the novels particularly interesting and internationally successful...
Yang Dong is renamed Vera.. from Oxford.
Wallfacer Luo is now a black British guy from Oxford.
Jin, derivative from Chinese characters in the books, is Chinese heritage, but grew up in New Zealand ... and Oxford.
Nanotech scientist Wang Miao is now a hot ass 20 something Latina girl boss who runs around in her panties and bra.. in Oxford.
They spent less time exploring the construction/function of the 10 dimensional sophons, key weapon of the Trisolarans against humanity, than the plot line around filming this girl getting drunk, stumbling around half naked, puking and crying.
They even renamed Da Shi fucking "Clarence" and made him from Manchester, working for Torchwood apparently, and has a gay, leftist, anti-establishment son, but they got a Chinese heritage actor..
The British PM and Navy only leads international or intersolar military responses in Dr Who, but that's what we are going for apparently. At least China is a superpower, and worked jointly with Washington in the novels.
Not as cringy as Amazon made Wheel of Time, but damn, they are trying.
Road House remake. Gyllenhaal is a very good actor. That said, zero stars. The writing makes Star Wars sequels look like Shakespeare.
Yeah McGregor was an absolute clown. I get that he/they were going for campy but like you said, those arms were just stupid at times. Wrecked whatever humor that character added. I saw a review singing McGregor's praises, lol. What a donut.I concur. Why does Conor McGregor walk around like Popeye the Sailor Man after having eaten some spinach? His walk looks like someone taking the piss out of a muscly guy in a really over-the-topic manner.

Yeah most of the humor they were trying for wasn't all that good but the crashing intentionally instead of parking cars was at least a bit funny. That seems like a script problem primarily to me - the guy is basically a hired thug; a giant sleaze-bag causing chaos and misery, and the goal was to shut down some small-time bar. Where's the humour in that?
While writing this, I wondered whether I was being fair: Surely comic book movies pull this kind of thing off all the time? The first example that popped into my head was from the 2004 Punisher movie with 'the Russian', but then that character wasn't meant to be funny at all, and the only humour in that fight scene was when the protagonist tried what he thought was a sure-fire tactic to slow the Russian down a bit only to find that it had virtually no effect on him, the humorous bit being the look of incredulity and resignation on the protagonist's face when he realises that he's really in the shit now.
Back to Road House, the scene where Conor's character is introduced by hopping out of the window of the lady he evidently just had sex with, the scene I'm sure was supposed to be humorous but I wonder what kind of audience that the humour was supposed to hit the mark with.
Overall I think Conor's character was written very poorly. IMO the only realistic character for him would have been unhinged and menacing, and any humour is derived from improbable stuff happening to him plus his reaction. Instead as you say I think they tried to make him both amusing and unhinged which IMO probably doesn't work well very often because the audience needs to know whether to take the character seriously or not.
PS: I have little doubt that Conor is a poor actor, but the film had bigger problems than him.
The Blurays of Man of Steel and Dredd sound awesome too.that it would probably sound awesome on my sound system
I'm pretty sure I watched those a while back on it. It sucks that Redbox is basically dead because that is where I used to just rent all my movies from but now there isn't really that option anymore. And I refuse to stream an action movie that I want to watch because the sound will be garbage. The Blurays of Man of Steel and Dredd sound awesome too.
I also felt that the last episode of Shogun was slow. Bit disappointing, because i drool when i see a new episode of Shogun being released. It almost made me want to download the 1980s version. (which, apparently, is based on the presupposition that those dumb uncivilized Japs did not know what guns are, when in fact Japan had the largest concentration of firearms in the entire world)Dune - 9/10 - good but not as good as the Lynch version [edit]
I also watched last night's Shogun episode and I am loving this show but last nights episode was kind of a dud to me. I'm not a huge fan of flashbacks in shows and there was a lot of it, and the story hardly progressed at all.
I don't know if you watch the "next on" at the end of each episode, but they are lying about what is on the next episode lol. Because the preview for last nights episode was totally different than what they showed. I think they may be doing something like "on this season of Shogun" and then show whatever they want, and I'm thinking it's the next episode.I also felt that the last episode of Shogun was slow. JG picks the weirdest movies and roles. I was actually surprised to see him playing Mysterio in the 2nd teenage Spiderman movie and he did a great job. Check these movies of his if you haven't seen them:I was never a big fan of Jake Gyllenhal but this + Road House within a week and he's growing on me. Like I know he is a great actor but for some reason in some of his roles I just didn't like him. It may be because I first saw him in Donnie Darko and hated that movie and just hold it against him.
