Total build cost trying for under 1700

AMD 64 :3800+ 323 NE
ASUS 7800 GTX 495 NE
XMS 1Gig PC 4300 209 NE
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe 165 NE
Sea Sonic 600w 143 SVC
WD reaptor 74Gig ( for OS and 3 most played games) 175 NE
old 60 deskstar (from current rig for storage)
Case: Xaser III for Tt (old design but I like it) 154 SVC

NE= newegg
SVC= locate store no shipping FTW Total= 1664 PLUS cables etc etc

I need som help on picking ram I think Im paying to little ram (amount and speed). I will use it for gaming thats it. If you know where i can get part at a lower cost great.

But I need help picking ram for the most part, I know very little about ram.

for a proc cooler looking at the venus 12, and replaceing all stock case fans with Smart Case fan II for Tt to run them at 4,800 RPM during gaming, NOW THAT alot of air flowing in and out of the case fast, no time for it to heat up.

SO what do you guys think ??????????????

I would get either the MSI K8N Neo4 mobo or the DFI LanParty mobo instead of the ASUS one. And why, WHY does everyone insist on getting those small-capacity 74GB Raptors? You could get a 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 drive off of Newegg for $95. Otherwise, nice build.

Why the other mobos, I like ASUS, and The raptors seek time owns, why not get it for just the OS and games>? I play alot of MMOs and I need them to load the content when the map changes etc etc, why not get a raptor ?? and why why why must everyone get 100 plus gig drives ??? I have ONE 57 Gig drive from my computer right now, has itbeen full at time yes, but I take alot of pics and just store them online and it cleans my drives. I don;t see how people fil a 240 Gig, sure if you like movies music etc but wow thats alot of memory.

Well for the motherboards, I'm pretty sure that the MSI and DFI boards OC better than the Asus board. However, if you're not going to overclock, then I guess the Asus will do fine.

Yeah, I don't plan on overclocking at all. Can one suggest some ram for under 200 ????

I'm looking to get a fast 1Gig for the rid for under 200 any suggestions for brand speed or type please let me hear them.

Oh and why not a raptor ????? just for the OS and my 3 most played games ??? not for storage. but I will have to wait till additional funds come in order to get a bigger HDD for storage uses.

procsesor is good

SLI is a waste go with a dfi ultra d if you overclock or a Epox ultra

Go with 2 gigs of value ram

Go with a normal 7800 gt

PSU is too much stick with a good named brand maybe a 500 watt forton bluestorm

Raptors use to be good but now there kinda a waste look for a hardrive with 16 MB of cache there almost as fast as the raptors if not faster and are WAYYYYY cheaper i think you can get 250 gigs for 90 bucks

hope that helped

Why do people prefer "fast" 1GB ram over value 2GB ram? The real-world benefit of 2GB is FAR more than being able to OC the RAM 50mhz. Battlefield 2 is perfect example. Heck, you can get a 2GB set of OCZ Platinum for $250, if you love that kinda thing. Otherwise, 2GB value ram can be easily had for ~$200.

Also, Raptor won't help much on game loading time and what not. Use the money to buy the lateset Samsung/Seagate/Hitachi SATA2 drives. Raptor only edges about 4-5 seconds in loading performance, and that minor increase in speed is far too less gain against the MUCH higher noise and heat from Raptor.

As for case choice, that's personal taste. But the numerous 80mm fans will start to make alot of noise (I prefer quiet PCs). I would at least go for 120mm intake/exhaust as standard right now. Also, get a Thermalright XP-120 instead of any TT coolers. MUCH better performance and MUCH quieter if you pair it with a Panaflo 120mm(or any of the latest low noise fans)

As you can see, I'm a bit more matured type of enthusiast. I prefer to go for real-world benefit over benchmarking. I also like to cut down on noise from my PC. If you have different goal, than it's your call. Just don't fall into benchmarking and marketing craze.

Oh and to add about the PSU... $150 for PSU is kinda over-kill. For me $100 for PSU tops it out. You really don't need 600 watt if you're not OCing. 450-500 watt should be plenty enough. You're spending tons of money on superfluous things.

Interesting, Here is what I thing about your comments on the build.

Ram, Ok Why not get some fast ram now and a few months down the line get some more fast ram ( as would be the cases for me) instead of getting a ton of crappy ram NOW ????

Vid Card why get the GT and not the GTX makes no sense to buy a less card when I can afford the best ???

Mobo: I want the SLI ,cause I don;t want to get a lesser board, just so I have to mod/tweak it just to get some of the standard feature son the SLI ( SATA2)

PSU; I will not over clock now but why not spend the extar 20 dollars now for the option to do it in the future????

HDD: Ok you guys hate the raptor I can tell, So how about I get one 36 raptor for the OS and One or two games and a secondardy Drive the other games /storage. If you think thats ok what a good secondary drive ??? ( under 100 gigs)

Cases, yeah the 7 fans might make alot of noise under gamming, they that cases seems to have good airflow and move air FAST, ti doesn't have time to heat up.

So Still looking to hear about what to do with the ram, HDD and cases suggestions are welcome, I want a COOL cases ( temp wise) for under 200 dollars. noise is not aproblem for me its just has to be cool.

THanks for the input thus far

True true, i think I will go for the dual core proc,

Anyone else got comments on what I should do about the

Ram setup: 1 Gig fast ram now or alot fo PC 3200 Ram ( Hyper X)

HDD: One raptor(36Gig) for OS and two game installs ?, then secondary drive for storage ok ?

Cases ???? I like thermaltakes but I want the coolest air cooled cases for under 200.

For RAM I recomend 2x1GB of OCZ platinum, works great for me.

7800GT is great, but it's your money, so get the GTX if you want

MOBO: Why do people think the SLI board is better, SATA II is on the non-SLI boards as well, if you aren't going to use SLI, there is no reason to get the SLI board, the DFI lanparty Ultra-D is the best if you are going to overclock, and has all the features of the Asus except for SLI, and it can even be modded for that if you you can get an SLI bridge, while costing a lot less..

HDD: I had raid-0 raptors. They helped a little with load times, but my SATA II drive is just as fast, for a lot less money, with more space.

For the case I recomend the Sonata II, it comes with a 450w PSU, that will be more than enough for your rig. You could always get another PSU later if you wanted to. It's got nice side mounted hard drive cages, good airflow, and quiet. If you want a good quality PSU, the Aspire is NOT the way to go, they aren't the worst, but Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Seasonic, are all much higher quality.

You seem to think that having 7 case fans will make for great airflow, but having too many fans is just as bad as not having enough..

Actually the Asus SLI series overclocks very well, there is no need for the other boards if you like Asus. Get the Premium over the Deluxe, the price is the same but the Premium has a quieter and more reliable design. You can get Crucial Ballistix 1GB for well under $200, last I checked it was around $120 total. You can get a Raptor but really, I dont believe its worth the price for its small storage space and minimal performance gain over mainstream hard drives. If you want a fast mainstream hard drive, the Hitachi 250GB and/or Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB or the smaller size one are among the fastest. They are both around $100.

OK i will stay with the seasonic.

I think I will stay with the A8N SLI , JUST CAUSE ASUS fan boy here.

YES I Do think that 7 fans is great. BUT I also think that the new thermaltake cases have to be better than the older ones.

I like thermaltake Cases, the SHARK I LOVE, but how can it promote air flow when it has a huge honeycomb in the side of it and just two big fans.

AS for ram thinking of going with 2 gigs of this
http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3746176?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Not sure what you guys think of hyper X

HDD: I think I will STILL get one raptor 74 gig for the OS and games.

and use my old drive as storage. and get another one when I can afford too.

I want to get a NICE COOL case thats one of the main things I'm looking at beside price hunting right now, I will have the money in about a week ( when I get paid)

I LOVE thermaltake, I like the shark but hate dusk and the shark with the whole in the side seem like a dust lover, so their only other case I like is hmmmm the dream is nice but my brother has it lol, the armor is nice but not that good looking IMO.

PLease let me know if you guys know a good case ( good as in cool/ temp wise) that is not thermal take and is of great build quality, under 200.

As for proc cooling thinking of going with the Venus 12 for Tt

Cases I'm looking at

Tt: Kandalf: its the armor with a better looking front ( does it have dusk filters on the mesh like the armor anyone know ??

Tt Xaser III; an old but true case.
Tt Shark: it looks nice but how can it cool with the honeycomb cut out of the side ?

2x1GB of valueram from a good maker. It'll cost maybe 20-40 bucks more than that 1GB kit you're buying. It'll lose in some pure synthetic benchmarks but that'll translate to only a few frames in most games. And in some newer games like BF2 and FEAR, the extra RAM will actually help more than having less but faster RAM.

Nothing else major I'd change about your config. As for the case, one thing I like is 120mm fans. They may not really cool any better than the high performance 80mm fans but pushing the same amount of air, they are quieter and that's a plus. Also make sure the intake and exhaust fan holes are open and don't restrict airflow. Everything else about a computer case is purely personal taste for me.

don't get that ram. get the value ram and get 2gb worth of it

don't get a raptor - it's a waste of money. if you really think tranfer rate means something, get a 160gb or 250gb SATA II drive. basically all of them are good.

psu is waaay too much. get something in the 450-500w range for half that price.

if you prefer "fast" ram, get 2gb of it now. it's not like the performance boost is signifcant compared to value ram

do you need a dual core processor? you can stick with a 3200, 3700 or 4000+ cpu and overclock if you want it to be faster.

for a case, i heard the p180s are good, although i don't think they're too attractive

Man yo guys love valus ram. NO VALUE RAM for my system.

I think I will BUY either this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145504
or this one, BUT I LIKE THE LEDS ON THE FIRST ONE>

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145560

Then when I have the money I, ( within two months ) i will get another stick of it to dual channel them.

I would rather get a fast 1 gig stick now and wait two months for another one, than get crappy value ram now and be screwed later on.
