I'm new to building pc's so please excuse the noob question.

I plan on going with an NForce4 Ultra baord and I see MSI has just released one. I'm wondering how 'safe' it is to order a board so soon after release. I know its anyone's guess but I'm concerned about new items that still have to get the bugs out. What sort of quality can a guy expect with a first release from MSI? If it matters, how long of a wait is long enough? Chaintech has had one out for a few weeks but a friend of mine hasnt had good luck with them and suggested I wait for others.

If needed, I dont mind waiting a little longer but I'd like to get things going within the next month or so. Maybe more manufacturers will have nf4 ultras soon but I'll be in the same boat as I am now with the new release issue.

I know I can always wait for reviews, but I'm guessing it will be out of stock by then.

edit: For what its worth, I might try some limited overclocking. I'll probably go with a decent video card but not necessarily top of the line....maybe a 6600 GT. CPU in the 3200+ range. Will upgrade in the future.

I definitely say wait for the board to be vetted, and also for the price to drop. Make sure you are fully informed about the board's quirks. For example, the MSI board requires a -5V rail to run the onboard sound, despite the new 2.0 PSUs being without one.

I don't think it'll be too long before we see an AT nForce 4 mobo round up.

And whats the big deal behind the DFI boards? Have they improved that much in recent time, I remember they used to be far from the best. Personally, I stick to Abit and Asus, two vendors whose boards have always served me flawlessly.

the dfi boards use simulated sli for the price of a ultra board. simulated sli is anywere from 15% slower to a few percent faster, but once you use a pencil to mod the chip itself, it turns into a full fledged sli board with two x16 slots.

DFI tend to be very good overclockers, when I go PCI-e, I will be geting their board.

HedBang,
Also check out Foxconn's NF4 Ultra & Chaintech's

Just because MSI "was" most popular mobo for the time, it doesn't mean that they'll make another good one.
Look at Asus... how many hits & misses

Always amazes me how people put so much faith in Abit and Asus brand,I `ve virtually used them all and can tell you DFI is as good as any other brand including Asus and Abit, all brands produce a hit or miss now and then over the years, however I`ve never had problems with any of my brands and the list is quite big.

Bottom line is there are plenty of good brands out there, only downside right now is the restricted choice availability of NF4 models,FYI more important then brand is good quality PSU and ram, people should be more concerned about this then the brand in question.
