I tried many times to convince myself to buy the consumer oriented modules, especially after they started getting big discounts. Every time the math did not work out, they were too small for an OS partition or too slow for caching/pagefile. The small size I could undertstand considering their cost, but gimping their speed marked them for commercial death. I never found out if this was a price issue or Intel just segmented these products into oblivion.
There was one guy in AT that tested an artificially 2GB limited system with Optane drive as the main and he said it was fairly responsive. I know when such heavy pagefile is required on an SSD the system becomes unbearably slow.

Their bandwidth left a lot to be desired but their latency is pretty low which is sole factor in responsiveness, and from what I remember not different from a RAMDrive.

I am pretty sure pricing is a factor. Someone said Intel barely made money on the large 900P drives. So whatever bargain bin must go to the Optane Memory product. Some are artificial, but I doubt it's 100%.

I had Optane Memory enabled system. It did work pretty well. It isn't the performance that's the issue. It's the fact that when the software gets an error, which is an inevitable reality for computers, no matter how well written, your system cannot be accessed. It is a BIG deal.

They would have been better off just partnering with a 3rd party that were popular for HDD caching. But taking an extremely fancy new technology and marketing to ultra cheap computers doesn't match.

Why call it Optane "Memory" if it doesn't do the job of memory?
Pretty sure Linux Mint asks me to restart after say kernel updates. Sure, it doesn't happen anywhere as often as Windows asking for a reboot after a Windows update, but it does happen.
Ok. I didn't have to do that with Ubuntu. But it doesn't change that Microsoft with all their resources make a really terrible OS.
