Sorry if this has been answered somewhere but I have an important question..

Seems most are using a powerful gpu for rendering and a moderate gpu for PhysX. If running two powerful cards, say GTX 285 in SLI and PhysX is enabled, does it use the 2nd card solely for PhysX, or only a portion of 2nd card's power, or shared PhysX between the two?

Main reason for the question is I'd not want to have a powerful 2nd card with PhysX enabled if it's not being used for SLI. Make sense? Thanks in advance..

That is a very valid question :thumbsup: It can be easily verified by someone with a SLI setup.

1. Run the game with SLI enabled and PhysX On
2. Run the game with SLI disabled and PhysX On (on the same card as in point 1).

Someone willing to provide the data?

Sure.

Cryostasis tech demo (same settings as Keys...comp in sig with CPU at 3GHz, ATI card at 800/950 AND 8800GT at 335/1000/600):
MIN/AVG/MAX-->17.8/36.8/81

Batman Arkham Asylum (these results are from a fraps run through the WHOLE demo):
(same settings as Keys but I don't think AA is on...8800GT at 500/1500/600)
MIN/AVG/MAX-->25/54.6/64

Once Keys lets me know how he did his Arkham Asylum demo run I'll add those results as well.

Arkham Asylum: Walk through and kill the first 9 bad guys ending in the corridor with the guard that gets up from the ground. But that's only the demo version. I have yet to find the right time to gather up all the cards again. It's a pain. I planned to do it this past weekend, but my sisters house had a leaky roof, and I was "elected" to put a new roof on her house.
I was a full time carpenter for about 15 years ending in 1999. Even though I do work out twice per week, I am as sore as hell right now. Going to be worse tomorrow.

Sweet! Considering a HD4870 1GB is like 10-20% slower than a GTX280 those are excellent results! Looks pretty much in-line with what you could expect from a GTX260 with a 8800GT based on what Keys posted

EDIT: And that's 1680x1050 AAx4 ? I can see you have a 24" LCD.

Hey guys several benchmarks with full version of Darkest of Days on several different operating systems with a gtx 260 core 216. If you're interested, they're here http://forums.darkestofdays.com/showthread.php?t=276 and the last post has the most updated benchmarks with the as-of-current 190.62 drivers. I used the built-in benchmark tool and the number represented is the average of running the benchmark.

Notice that Darkest of Days with physx enabled performed much better on my system in Windows XP 32-bit than Windows 7 64-bit.

Yeah I lowered the res to match Keys' settings...at 1920x1200 Arkham becomes unplayable in scenes with heavy PhysX. And no I don't think AA is running. I tried hacking AA to run in the demo but it wouldn't work (Arkham demo has nV specific AA as well) although some have got it to work.

Hey Keys -

if you have another operating system besides win7, I highly suggest benchmarking Darkest of Days in it. I dual boot win xp 32-bit with win 7 64-bit, and if you look at my previous post I get much, much better performance in Windows XP with physx enabled when playing Darkest of Days.

Hey.

Ok, why do you think that is? My bet is the drivers need more work. At any rate, I'm hooked on Windows 7 and not turning back at this point.
Not for a single game anyway. And certainly not with a GTX295 + 9600GSO.
Got a second NV PhysX class card you can throw in there next to your GTX260?

It could be drivers, but the benchmarks are with the most updated versions for the respective operating systems at the time I benchmarked them, and it's an awfully big performance difference. I myself prefer Win7 now and only boot into XP for...well... this game.

I keep eyeing a second card for physx - I actually did some research on the 9600GSO after going over your benchmarks. It seems the 9600GSO is probably a better dedicated physx card than the 9600GT because it has more stream processors - correct?

Also, I'm slightly torn between getting a second card for physx, or waiting till this winter and attempting to SLI my P35 motherboard with this hack: http://xdevs.com/e107_plugins/...content.php?content.30.
