I'm building a KT7A RAID with 2 30GB HD's (striped) using a 1GHz TBird. What OS would anyone recommend for this platform? It will be primarily used for games. I have WinME and 98. I've heard Win98SE would run fastest. True? Is SE an upgrade to Win98? Will I have to buy it or just d/l. Thanks

I recommend Windows 2000, but I guess that's not an option since you didn't list it.

I prefer Win98SE to WinME. I had a couple of issues with ME that I could never figure out, plus I missed the DOS prompt. I'm not sure which is faster for games. If one is faster than the other, it probably isn't by much.

SE => Second Edition, and it is an upgrade to Win98, but you can't download it. You need to buy it.

win2k would be much more stable. it supports most games as well.

and win98se would be better than winME. think ME is not really a worthy upgrade from 98se.

win2k. performance will take a slight hit over win98, but it'll be more than fast enough with your cpu, unless you have a radeon...

Actually some of my games run faster(smoother) in win2k and browsing the internet is definately faster. Also, from what I've heard the Radeon is performing well in win2k also...unless you don't actually have one.

gaming preformance in win2k seem to be very dependant on the state of the video card drivers.

Many game work well in win2k, however some do not.

Since 2000 isn't an option, go with 98SE. I used WinMe for about three months and while it had some nice things (system restore), if something doesn't work you're gonna have a harder time fixing it in WinMe than in 98SE. That's just from personal experience.

I much prefer Win98SE to WinME...but Win2000Pro slaughters them both. But you were expecting that weren't you?

The only thing I've had problems with in Win2k is my ATi TV-Wonder
All my games ran great with good performance.

win98 over ME. But i agree with most people, that once you used 2k you will never go back. I guess i depends on your memory, if you have 256, i'd say forget about 9x and go with 2k, if 128, i stick with 9x. Never liked ME

Once you use 2k you'll never return to the crappy world of the 9x kernel. I have never had a game that won't work on win2k, and I have had my computer up and running for periods of over a month with no need to reboot and no crashes. Its stability blows any 9x OS out of the water.

I'd use windows 2000 except for the fact that bleem!, neoragex, puzzle fighter, and callus don't work in win2000.

I'm going to tell you the same thing many others have. If you're limited to Win98 or WinME go with the former. If Win2K is an option that's the way to go.

OSR2: the lean mean gaming OS. Everything you always wanted in a Windows, without the bloat/bugs. Speaking of which, do not install IE4 or higher.
