hi guys I am completely new to overclocking the other day I did overclock my system I'll give a brief details of my set up:
lian li case pc65
p4 3.06ghz
asus p4pe
corsair xms 3500
maya radeon 9700pro
enermax psu 431w
western digital 80 gb special edition 8 mb buffer
audigy2
cooling alaska:Akasa AK-670CU-BL PIV Socket 478 Cooler

anyway I did push this system @3358.29mhz I couldn't go any further do I need better cooling?? do I need to change some settings in the bios??set memory timing more aggressive, where do you lock the agp/pci bus??and many more questions??but the odd thing is when I run some benchmarks in overclock mode my score were less than stock speed specially 3d mark03 not sandra was higher.do you know why my graphic card underperfoms???
I would be delighted for your help

That tape bites the big one... post back when you get the ASIII and apply it. Use their directions listed on their web page. I am not too convinced on your coolers capabilities, but the ASIII should help some.

I have another heatsink a zalman Pentium 4 S478 Flower Cooler CNPS6500B-ALCU I 'll mount that with ASIII and see how it goes yersterday I did push to 3384 mhz it did boot into windows as soon I was running sandra it crashed in a BSoD reput back at stock except the memory timings are set at:2/2/2/5 turbo mode in effect I have a cpu speed of 3105mhz why???thanks for help

Personally I have never tried the zalman cooler you ordered. I am curious as to its cooling capabilities. I run either retail or Alpha 8942 coolers. The Alpha is hard to install, but works most excellently.
While the flower cooler does look impressive, I can not find it in my heart to believe it will be a good heatsink for overclocking... but I maybe wrong on that.

I Heartily suggest that that Zalman Heatsink is no good for any sort of serious Overclocking. If you got the model number right then it's not even the Full copper one, just a part copper core!!

Get a better HSF combo.

you are right it's part copper and majority alluminium I can't decide whether to get alpha pal or the thermalright slk900 when it will become avalible in the uk
are there any other tricks to do in the bios???for instance how to get the full potential of the corsair ram ???for locking the AGP?PCI bus just go to manual and set the frequency,is it normal to get a BSoD while overclocked????

Well, one of the first things you want to do is get a program like motherboard monitor and see what your CPU temp is. If it is overheating, then you found the why your OC is limited. If the temp looks OK, then start upping the voltage and locking down the PCI bus (if your board supports that- I don't know if it does).

do you think that is the reason why I get a BSoD I need to up the vcore?my mobo is a asus P4PE it does have lots of features on agp/pci setting it does have a manual entry so I can put it to 66/33 and leave it is that how you lock the pci bus/??I have applied some artic silver 3 paste changed heatsink I am now using a zalman and I have to say is about the same once I reach 146fsb it become unstable I booted at 147fsb I run memory bandwidth in sandra but it crashed when I run the cpu benchmark usual BSoD,my mobo has a utility called probe and it does monitor temperature for the cpu and mobo plus fan speed etc.at the moment I have 43c on the cpu and 36c on the mobo I am not overclocked at the moment when I was overclocked it did record at 146fsb 48c idle and 52c load I have to admit that it cools better with the alaska.I also purchased a delta screamer 80mm fan can it be mounted on top of an alpha HSF???I heard good things about the termalright slk900 it's an all copper HFS.

it's just looks this zalman it's not for this cpu cooling are very limited I have applied the AS3 cooling REMAIN THE SAME I have reinstall the alaska hfs I have no options left to install a thermalright slk900 with a good fan temperature wise the ASUS mobos are notorious known to report higher temperature about 5c more at this moment not overclocked with aggressive timings 2/2/2/5 and memory ran at 355mhz the bios gives that option the cpu clock @3105.79mhz.
I don't understand why??

anyway your answears are met never think to get a zalman I don't recomend it.

cheers Conci

welcome to the forums
I suggest you read some older post and stuff about overclocking the P4 in the forums they can be really informative

also
be very carefull with voltages

and to reitterate what others are saying:
get a better HSF if possible
monitor the temp before overclocking to see where your headed
and don't rush things

you have a diamond of a system there treat it nice

dang musta cost a pretty penny

soulkeeper: could you post some links to old threads you think contain good discussion? I couldn't find any. More specifically, I was hoping to answer these questions:

I changed my CPU frequency alone. Do I need to change anything else with it, eg, AGP/PCI ratio, DDR/CPU ratio or any other voltage settings?

Got a P4 2.4B c1 stepping (SL6EF) and a Albatron mobo. Overclocked to 2.93Ghz (@163 frequency) but it was not stable. Now I am down to 2.7GHz (@150 only).

Could someone help??? Thank you.

yeah i'v never owned that board but as the fsb increases so does the pci bus and devices can have troubles, limiting your overclock.
I don't know any threads offf hand, but you can use the search feature to find info on any topic relating to P4 overclocking most everythings been covered heh

good luck
