I've been running with shit computers my whole life... The last games I recall playing for the PC were some of the Police Quest games, In the 1st Degree, Leisure Suit Larry 6, a few of the King's Quests, and some of the Quest for Glory games. I dabbled in WoW for a while on my current computer, but the 4 FPS eventually caught up to me and I quit it like a bad habit (wait... WoW is a bad habit, isn't it?)

Anyways, I'm going to be building a gaming PC for myself in the next few weeks, with an i5-760 and geforce gtx 460... What should be the first few titles I line up for myself to catch up with the world of PC Gaming? New additions, benchmarks, classics... RPG, FPS, adventure, MMORP... No discrimination here, I'm an open book and I like all different types of games.

What are some must-plays that everyone suggests?

really depends on your gaming style and time available.

Atm I'm playing Warhammer 40K Dawn of war II which is a nice RPG/RTS. (Actually playin DoW 2: retributions beta MP, waiting for it to come out)

I would install steam and keep an eye out for interesting deals to pop up. You can buy the games now and wait to install them when you get your new computer. You can get Half-Life: episode 2 now with -75% reduction

Holy crap, you've played those old games and you haven't even played Doom or Quake yet? D:

Actually, you should probably go to the 'top 100' games thread, lots of suggestions.

Well start with the best current stuff.

for multiplayer:

Battlefield bad company 2
Starcraft 1/2
Company of heroes
Battlefield 3 (when its out)
League of legends (free, quite addictive)
Left 4 dead 2

for single player:

Dead space 1/2 (might want a gamepad)
Mass effect 1/2 (might want a gamepad)
Fallout 3 & Fallout new vegas (might want a gamepad)
Civilization IV complete
Crysis
The orange box (has half life 2 + portal and other good stuff all in one)

Also sins of a solar empire is really good, i play it in single player but it does have multiplayer as well, its a real time strategy in space, very good UI, fun gameplay.

If you like Real Time Strategy, any of the total war series other than Empire or Napoleon (Shogun 2 is just coming out and looks amazing, demo available on steam). Company of Heroes and its expansions are also excellent. For a more traditional RTS, Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends are awesome, as are Starcraft and Starcraft 2.

I personally find Dawn of War to be pretty bland. It's basically dumbed down Company of Heroes in terms of gameplay, and little to no mission variation (go here and kill this unit, defend this spot, rinse and repeat for 30 missions).

For 3rd Person Shooter/RPG, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. The latter being far superior IMO.

For an old-school adventure/RPG game, Star Control 2 has been ported to modern systems as an open-source project free of charge. Awesome game.

I'll throw my two cents in and recommend the games that I play:

Sins of a Solar Empire
(unique, excellent 4x-RTS with online multiplayer capability that won several Game of the Year awards)

Unreal Tournament 2004 -- It's a sequel to the original Unreal Tournament (1999 or UT99), which was arguably the greatest online multiplayer FPS of all time. This may be the last decent arena style FPS ever released. You can still find packed servers for its premier game, Onslaught during prime time. Invasion Monster Hunt RPG is also fun and can be played 24/7.)

Savage 2
-- This is a little-known, fun melee style FPS with some RTS elements. It's a lot of fun once you learn the game and you can find populated servers 24/7, and it's FREE! Let me say that again, it's FREE!!! It even has an active community and discussion forum. You can download it here: http://www.Savage2.com

Maybe The Witcher, since the sequel is coming out soon. I also like STALKER SoC and STALKER CoP. I never tried Clear Sky.

Recently I've liked
The Witcher (you'll either love it or hate it)
King's Bounty & KB:Armored Princess (turn based strategy)
League of Legends (online battle arena rpg-ish)
Defense Grid
Plants Vrs Zombies (my kids love this too).

While I haven't played it in a year or so (took too much of my time!) Guild Wars is an excellent MMO ("purists" will shake their fists at me for calling it that).

It's great PvE with some useful, maybe fun PvP--I rarely did that b/c it really isn't my thing. Really awesome skill system and character customization. very fun classes to play, but it can take a while to really get to the fun elements.

You can get the entire trilogy on Steam for 30 bucks right now (I think). That's a massive amount of content, though.

the beauty is that you don't pay to play. One time purchase is all. No real special items to pay for in game that provide balance issues. The only things you can buy are just for looks, basically.

as far as catching up, goes, I'd say games like Rise of Nations, Company of Heroes, KOTOR, Civ IV, the Halflife games...

well i built a decent gaming rig out of old 2005 computer parts. a 2.8gh pentium d with 2 gb of ddr2 5300 and a gt 240 oc and its plays every thing i though at it on high if the game is updated metro 2033 works ok on maxed dx10 on a crt monitor and 60fps on cod4 and cod6 black ops still not completely fixed. but i think my card is being slowed down by my cpu so get a quad core with new gpus.
