New Win2k Server Question...

OK. I am an admin of a 20 computer WinNT 4 network. We are testing an upgrade to 2k Server. We bought a new Dell Server and I put 2k Server on it. If you add a user to Active Directory , can that user log on (using the Win2k to auth) to the network using a WinNT workstation? Help please..

to my knowledge they can log into the the server from a nt4 box, however I have never done it.

however, if you have a win2k box and a win2k machine you have to add both a user and the computer to the AD, i do not know if thats any help, but hey i am trying my best.

make sure your domain name is being recognized and that your dns settings are correct, i spend about 3 days figuring that crap out.

Yes you can. I believe the resource kit as something that you can use on OS' as low as Win 3.1 that will let them use Active Directory. Kind of a client. I am pretty sure its on the CD though.

When you initally set up the server, you were given the option to choose between a &quot;Mixed Mode&quot; or &quot;Native Mode&quot;. If you planned on having NT4 machines on the domain, you should have chosen mixed mode.

yes, a user can log onto a Win2k server that is running AD with an NT workstation, no problem.....also, native mode only refers to the domain controllers---native mode requires that the domain controllers all be 2000, but member servers or workstations can be NT, 98, etc...a mixed mode domain contains both NT and 2000 DCs....dam is correct that in 2000, DNS is key....you need to know DNS to effectively utilize 2000 and AD..hope this helps

I already helped him out with his issues. Thanks for everyone's input to his problems. Yes, DNS was the major issue. He also had NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled on his NIC interface. I had him completely un-install Active Directory, and install DNS on the local server. I guided him through the proper way of installing AD. His issues are now gone. The only problem left now is resolving any Event Log errors.
