Newbie question about E6600 multiplier

I understand OS can varies E6600's multiplier between 6 and 9 depending on the load. Is there a SW available to tell what the current multiplier is?
For my DS3/E6600 setup, CPU-Z seems to display whatever I set in the BIOS and the multiplier does not change whether my PC is idle or under load.

I had the same issue(?) with my E6600+DS4 setup, the solution was to set the machine to "laptop" under the energy management.

CPUZ will show you the correct speed/multiplier aswell.

I tried your suggestion (going to laptop) on my E6600 and you're right--that's pretty neat. This can't be specific to the E6600 though? I run CPU-Z too and can see it toggle up and down depending on the load. I run my PC at 300FSB but just about anything should work I'd say.

It's a cpu feature to save power while there's no load. All cpu's have it. AMD calls it speedstep I believe... as for intel... I can't remember lol.

I tried it on an older 3.4GHz Prescott, no luck there. Thanks for the update; it must be a recent feature.

I tried but the multiplier does not change even when I run two copies of prime95. Both Intel TAT and CPU-Z show 1.600 GHz fo rmy E6600.

Check the multiplier in the bios, maybe it's on 6x (as far as i know, the bios sets the limit, so if you have 8x in the bios, windows won't go higher, even if there's an extra multiplier). In fact, when i first turned on my machine, it had a 6x "fail safe" multiplier, the only thing you gotta do is raise it to 9x.

And as one stated above, when you set your pc to "laptop" profile, windows turns on enhanced speed step in order to save energy (lowers the clock and VCore when idle), althought those enhancements must be turned on in the bios before using them.

It's speedstep. I has been available in laptop chips for a while. The 6xx series prescotts actualy have it as well, as do core 2 duo CPU's.

actually, it is present in my p4 560 chip. I'd say almost any modern intel chip has it.
