Lots of reasons... but for us (TACube) - it's the thrill of the competition.
We are in a fierce battle to build membership for the RC5 effort.
The Dutch (DPC) are kicking our proverbial butts despite the fact that presently TA is #1 in the world.

I'm sure there are others with other reasons... but that's why we're in it.

Are TAcube and Anandtech the same team or is there several teams within Anandtech?

TA Cube is a &quot;mini&quot; team within Team AnandTech. There are several: The Federation, which actually has three fleets; TWTA (Team Within Team AnandTech); RC5 Crackheads; The Nekkid Crackers, etc. All mini team production counts for Team AnandTech.

TACube is the #1 team within Team Anandtech. We are all however Team Anandtech.
Some other notable teams are TWTA (Team Within Team AnandTech), The Federation, The Naked Crackers, Species8472, rc5crackheads... etc. (hope I didn't leave too many folks out)

Joining any of the above is to still join Team Anandtech. You also may choose to go solo, or create your own mini-team.

We're a diverse group of people, and everyone are into distributed computing for different reasons... I'm into it because I thought it was a nice way to give something back to Anand for supplying me with excellent reviews and keeping me up to speed... When I then discovered this place it became more about this... The guys here are INCREDIBLE! They're the most supportive, imaginative and great guys I've had the pleasure to meet online... and they're excellent support whether my problem is personal or technical... I'd guess you could say they've become some of my best friends!

One other point to distributed computing, at least to me, is that it's FUN! and we've got STATS! You can check my RC5 stats from the link in my sig, and more stats are available at our website! And it's cool to see how much we can get done when pooling all our &quot;computing resources&quot; together... we can do an aweful lot of work in just a day you know... just using the idle cycles of our machines

We've also got our own IRC server, several game servers (mainly UT at the moment, but there'll be more soon!), a setup with several proxies working together to even out the load on our main keyserver (for DNet projects), our own stats pages for SETI (nexus9's I believe) and osmo is working on a new kind of stats thing for the DCypher project Gamma Flux!

You really should check our website since there are a lot of useful information there, including FAQ's and tutorials... And we'll of course be happy to answer any questions you've got!

I hope you will join us since we could use all the help we can get!

We all do it for Fun!, but the definition of fun takes many forms. The friendly competition with other teams, with other team mates, the fun of seeing our statistics improve, the fun of working with PCs and squeezing out every ounce of performance we can, the fun of sharing knowledge with others, the fun of learning new things, the fun of fellowship, the fun of fragging teammates in UT and other games, the fun of chatting in mIRC, and the fun of having fun!

I also agree with TwoFace, I've met some awesome people here!

Do you guys leave your machines running all day &quot;crunching&quot;?? Do you have dedicated maching running to do this stuff? Can you run several computers at once to get your stats up?

We run 'em 24x7. You can have as many machines as you want.

Actually... your machine(s) will like you better when you do. It's alot less stress on a computer to leave it on all the time, and it uses very little electricity. Plus, cracking keeps your processor nice and warmed up ready for action. (kinda like a heated garage in the winter for your car)

Since the client has the lowest priority, system resources are released on demand - so no reason to ever shut the client down. When you start getting interested in the stats, you'll be 24x7 guaranteed.

Did you join a miniteam and installed with the preconfig. client or did you join as a solo member in Team Anandtech? If you used the preconfig. client you don't have to do anything else, it crunches and when it's done (when the buff.out is empty), it will send away the work and get new blocks. If you're solo member check these link link2

I still have not been ranked, so I have not joined any group yet. How do I join subgroups? i noticed that tacube has a rule that you have to be cracking for 30 days before you join.

To join a mini-team, most of the time you change the email address you are cracking with to the mini-team email address. The downside of that is no personal stats, unless that mini-team has a perproxy setup for the team. Some of the mini-teams you can retire your email addy to, so any blocks cracked under your email get credited to that mini-team.

if you aren't sure, take your time, check things out, check out each mini-team, and then decide if you want to stay solo or join a mini-team. Either way, you are cracking for Team Anandtech, and that's the most important thing!

Ok, now to serious things..
You can crack solo by using your own email adress, provided you get your password from dnet and have your account join TeamAnandtech. This way you have your stats from the dnet stats server. Thats the option most people chose.

OR you are less an individual kind of guy and you agreee to join one of the collectives we have around here. Then you replace your own email by the collective email in the ini file. The account is already joined into TA so you have no other step to take care of, just crack along.

The purpose of such miniteams is to add up massive processing power under single accounts, in order to place AT accounts in the highest ranks of dnet, which can supposedly attract interrest on the TeAm.

There are a choice of such miniTeams around to choose from, and I wont plug for the one I'm with, since it has been widely accepted as being the best to belong to. Plus, you get to wear a snappy uniform, and we have a cool ranking system. Wanna be a Fleet Commander ?
