Apparently New Egg appears to be definitely going downhills... recently I have been noticing many price increases, less free shipping promotions, and now have to pay tax in NJ. The most clear cut example of this nonsense is thier pricing with flat panels... while thier prices were good at one point they are not. Last year I purchased the Sony SDM-X73 17" LCD Monitor w/ Speakers Retail for 436$ shipped.... I was also the first to review the flat panel:
I purchased this LCD for $436 (506-70 rebate) as a replacement to my Sony Trintron CRT. The Sony while very good, does not hold a candle to the LCD version. While this is not the biggest or the best LCD it is very price effective. It also has awesome specs (16ms refresh! No ghosting, ever.) Look them up at the Sony site. It takes a bit of digging. Oh yeah, and no dead pixels.
Now, the same lcd flat panel sells for 549$ (Item#: N82E16824006051) + 18$ (Shipping) = 567$... that is not counting the tax I would have to pay now to purchase it... so with tax the total would be 601.02$. That is ridiculous for an increased price difference of 165.02$ since 8/14/2003. Even if you take into account the 70$ rebate, the price has still increased close to 100$.
In summary, while NewEgg might have been hot at one time, it no longer is.... even with them charging now higher prices and shipping on refurbs...
