All,
Just received an email from ShimiShim who purchased my 2 36GB Raptors back in April. I originally purchased them from NewEgg on 7/14/2003 with the understanding that they carried a 5 year warranty.

Well, one of the drives went bad and Shim tried to RMA it to W.D. The RMA website stated the drive was not in warranty. Shim emailed me and I proceeded to call W.D. support. They told me the drive was built to be sold in Asia, and not in the US, and thus carries NO warranty!

They also stated that NewEgg should NOT be selling these drives in the U.S. and I would need to contact them for support.

As much as I have praised NewEgg in the past, I hope that they did not sell these drives knowing that they would not be waranteed. I will reserve judgment until I call them later today.

Regards,
Michael

This was posted a few months back with a buyer beware admonition. I'd call da egg because they have went above&beyond for me before They will make it right if you pursue the matter properly I believe.

Yeah, i thought I heard something about it....but I purchased way before the issue was discovered.

NewEgg has been really good with me in the past, so I see no reason for there being a problem

This one is on Newegg I believe. They know damned well what is going on with the drives and do not so much as have a disclaimer. That's why they better back it.

Tabb, they were OEM drive not meant for sale in the US, and as such have no warranty in the US. NewEgg is going to take the financial hit on this.

That's called "grey marketing" used to be way more common when dollar was high.

Newegg *will* take care of you. But I have started ordering from Mwave.com again due to the eggs higher pricing.

Good deal, and as expected. This is a good reminder of the fact that most Newegg Raptors are backed only by Newegg so ^

that's a good question...

it's just unfortunate because if I have another hitch, i have to do this again through mamisano instead of doing directly with WD.

maybe the new ones they send back won't be "grey market" ones but legal US ones

I posted the very same thing a few months back.
I had to call WD and get a number to give to Newegg snd they RMA'D THE DRIVE.
Pretty shady practice by Newegg, no wonder some of their stuff is so cheap.

So, what makes these grey market? The fact that they're OEM, or is it something else?

This is just so stupid, Newegg.

I recall someone posting about how one of their local computer shops claimed Newegg sold items that aren't supposed to be sold in the US, seems like they were partially right.

The big question here is why is there a difference between the ones sold in Asia and United States. Shouldn't the quality and warrantee be the same!!!

I will say from experience that newegg isn't as good as they used to be, especially when it comes to customer service.

Actually, their prices are kinda high on the Raptors lately. My local Fry's has been running lots of deals on the 36GB retail boxes lately, usually $99.99 in-store with a $30 mail-in to bring it down to a $69+tax final cost. With this warranty issue, you know where I'm getting a Raptor from if I need one.

I had this happen with a WD 120GB SE drive. Newegg did give me an RMA after emailing Western Digital and then contacting Newegg a few times.

Doesn't ABS own Newegg and perhaps where the OEM parts come into play?

So, raptors from newegg have no warranty ?? Which online vendor sells US Warranty Raptors ?

This is not good, if newegg went out of business, then raptor owners are left high & dry..

How do to check to see if your raptor has a US warranty ??

Jose

I just checked my 74gb raptor and it's still under warranty until 2009. I bought this off Newegg around May 2004.

Yes, but the warranty coverage is not. This is a fairly common occurrence in the computer trade.

I checked my warranty on WDs site too, it says in warranty until 2009. I wonder if there is a chance that I am not covered with my OEM drive even though the website says I am?

My new 74 gig raptors I just bought from Newegg for 177.00 with a 25.00 rebate , final price 152.00.
I bought 2 of them and checked to see if they were warrented at WD sight.
They are warrented to 2009, it's actually the first thing I did before installing them.
So not all drives they sell are from asia.
The reason the Asian drives are not warrented was they sell for a much cheaper price than the US drives therefor no warrenty.

I have 2 74Gig Raptors, and 2 36Gig Raptors that I bought from NEWEGG. I just checked the WD website at WDC.com and looked under support- warranty information, and found all four of my Raptors listed by serial number. They were all listed as in warranty with an expiration date of 2009. Hope this helps !!!!!
