NewEgg Raptors have NO warranty????

I had heard about sometime last year, but when I got my 74GB Raptor as soon as I got it I checked the serials on WD's site and it did have a warrenty till 2009. Boy was I relieved hehe. I doubt there are many of these problems but I would guess with the large amounts of sales etc that newegg does there are bound to be shipment mix up etc. I don't see it as a problem as Newegg WILL fix the problem and more than likely you will get new drives which should have a warrentyat the start date of when you get the new drive.

I agree 100% that newegg is not what they used to be. I was probably one of the first ones here to order from them when they first started out and had very good experiences. Then up to around a few months ago. I see a many more people having problems with them. Not just customer service. Also in the products they sell, just like this hd thread. Not properly marking the 128Bit 9800 Pro, ect.. But I can honesly say that I haven't gotton "screwed" by them yet. I do plan on buying just some things there now instead of buying ALL my stuff there. To bad there prices aren't as competitive as they used to be. Of course this is all just my opinion

As you can see, from 05/2001 to at least 07/2003 when I purchased the Raptors that NewEgg was selling Foreign-Market drives! I am sure they had to know about it. :brokenheart:

Of course they did. Probably couldn't get enough U.S. versions and with the anticipation/demand by us, they took what they could get. Obviously they are taking responsibility for the RMAs so no BFD, that is unless a situation like yours' occurs.

I said the same thing months ago in a thread and everyone decided to flame me as if I had stolen candy from baby jesus. NewEgg has been pulling this **** for some time. The love affair some have with NewEgg is crazy, especially because if you search these forums, you're going to find a lot more of these "NewEgg sold me stuff that shouldn't have been sold in the US, now I'm screwed" threads. NewEgg will usually fix most of the problems with these issues, but that still doesn't make it ok in the first place.

I asked NewEgg directly about the warranty for the 74G raptor couple days ago and finally got a responce. Bottom line: if you purchase this drive, MAKE SURE you save a hard copy of NewEgg web page with 5-yr warranty info. NE claims they will honor the warranty even if WD will not.

I ordered two WD Sata drives from them last November (36gig Raptor and a 200gig) and both of them have valid US warrenties. I wonder what the percentage of non US warrentied drives versus US warrentied drives is/was.

btw, the returned raptors all have valid US warranties til 2009.

Ok, imagine yourself as WD manager. Assuming it costs $50 to build raptor and your marketing team estimates huge demand at $150 price in US, you're set the price at $150 and enjoy hefty profit margin in US and ... that's right, very weak sales in asia.

Now the same team tells you there is a big demand for raptors in asia, but at $75 price. It is still profitable, so you lower raptor prices there and enjoy a nice surge in demand. Total profit increases... At the same time you don't want to lower the prices in US and you don't want vendors like NE to buy your drives in asia and sell them in US, undercutting your own prices. What do do you do? You void the warranty in US to discourage buyers from going "grey market".

I made-up these number to illustrate the point so the exact prices/profits are different. The idea still holds, though. You can get more info about this sh!t by doing google search on "grey market".

As much as I have praised NewEgg in the past, I hope that they did not sell these drives knowing that they would not be waranteed. I will reserve judgment until I call them later today.

That is correct, OEM devices are warrented through the Dealer not the manufacturer. It is true for drives made by all companies. These rules apply to CPUS, motherboards, RAM, and anything else that has been sold or recieved as OEM. The warrenty for OEM is always done through the Place of purchase and the Manufacturer has no liabilty here.

Almost certianly. This practice is very common in the electronics industry. Kostya17 explained it pretty well. It happens with comp parts, stereo stuff...all kinds of stuff.

grey market throws a ratchet into a lot of marketing plans. From region-coded DVD's, MS windows, to levi's jeans (apparently cheaper in US, more expensive in the UK). Sometimes the companies succeed in passing legislation making grey-market sales illegal. Either way, every global corporation breaks down pricing / support for each region individually.
