Has anything been leaked/rumoured lately? Have been busy and not paying attention to hardware news. I remember people on this forum claiming it would be out by Q4 2012, but the last I heard (August 2012) was Q3 2013?

Nothing's changed, it will be released sometime next year.

Intel have no rivals against SB-E, so they are cruising and making obscene money.

Yep, agree on that. Glad I went IB on release day. People were trying to convince me to get a 3820 since IB-E "would be out soon" and provide an upgrade path. Right.

People forget server validation and tests takes alot longer time. And Haswell-E/EP/EX will be out in 2014 and kickstart DDR4 so we can have mainstream DDR4 for Skylake in 2015.

Consider that to be an improvement over all the people/rumors claiming that IBE was outright cancelled and would never be released :\

At least now the rumors are a little less absurd and a little more aligned with reality.

(no sarcasm here. seriously. i mean it. truely. i do. i swear. twice.)

It seems bizarre to release IB-E after Haswell considering that one of Haswell's biggest improvement is improved hardware support for multithreading.

It's not an 'improvement' because the thought was that they would cancel IV-E so they could jump straight to HW-E

instead HW-E will be ~18 months after IV-E which means early 2015

On that note, whatever happened to 3970X?

Yeah, that would suggest that IB Xeons were cancelled too. That's just not going to happen

Funny how the "validation time" has increased dramatically going from SB-E to IVB-E.

The same thing happened with successive Itanium iterations, and I doubt there were any nefarious reasons why that happened.

It is true that more complex designs required more thorough vetting before you can hope to build any confidence with the target demographic (server/HPC buyers) that the new stuff isn't going to turn the buyer into a beta tester.

In consumer markets we might be willing to be beta testers on early hardware because a random system reboot doesn't make the difference between losing a key account and not paying our bills. We can always reboot and log back into WoW.

Remember that TLB bug that AMD had after their initial B2 stepping release of Barcelona? That is the kind of stuff that keeps people up at night worrying that if they buy the latest and greatest in hardware then it will bite them in the ass on the weekend when they are out of the office.

Validation time is expanding because ISA's are expanding and the risk is ever increasing. As a systems seller you must demonstrate to your customers that you are doing what it takes to prove out the platform, cpu included, and there simply are no acceptable shortcuts for that demographic.

Its a real shame because the mainstream doesn't yet come with a decent number of cores or PCI-E slots. Admittedly few people use them but those of us that do also don't want to be saddled with machines that are dramatically slower than is available in mainstream.

If Haswell ends up worth having I will moan the loss of PCI-E slots limiting my GPUs.

Who in their right mind would use a pricey socket 2011 CPU over a socket 1155 CPU anyway? A damn fool, that's who. 1155 is better than 2011 for various reasons. Most of which will soon be addressed in this thread.

LOL@Adam.

I had people laughing at me as well when i dumped my e6750 back in 2007 for a q6600 and all i heard was that well quads are useless you wasted $300 LOL but the main game i played being UT3 at the time made tremendous use of the extra cores.

i remember the e8400 being the big rival and about a million e8400 vs q6600 threads popped across every forum on the web, well it took about 3 years but nearly every game makes use of quads and the q6600 with a oc is still a rather good processor.

Going by the experience of my old q6600 and how it aged well,i could see myself building a "foreverbox" with a 3930k build just as a pc i won't upgrade or touch it for the next 4-5 years.
