The next server product is Windows Server 2003, scheduled to release to manufacturing end of this month.

It was formerly known as Windows .NET Server until the marketing folks got to it.

Think of it as "Windows XP Server," which is kinda what it really is.

After that is "Longhorn," which is nowhere near the horizon and has no official name other than the Longhorn codename.

No, its too early for it to have a web site, but various Microsoft officials have spoken about it. You can see a preview of a very early alpha here. Keep in mind the final will probably look totally different though.

So is it really really worth upgrading to Longhorn? I just got XP Professional last November!!

Since Longhorn is still only in early beta, it is difficult to tell if the upgrade will be worth it. Plus, while target date is the second half of 2004, it'll probably be the first half of 2005. The OS has some interesting sounding stuff (new file system that is supposed to make data easier/faster to find no matter where it is on your hard drive or network. This file system should be in the next SQL Server product I believe). And some early alpha screenshots look neat. But again, I think it is hard to base "worthiness" of the upgrade at this early date.

What I worry more about is that this is a long cycle for MS to not release a new OS (usually they do a new one every 2 years or so) so I hope they don't do something like Windos XP Second Edition or some BS like that to tide them over.

No, it's probably not worth it, unless you also want to get new TCPA-enabled hardware so you can allow Longhorn to essentially give the administrative privileges of your system to Microsoft (Palladium, a feature of Longhorn operating system software, works with TCPA hardware to restrict audio files via DRM, and prevents you from running software that's not "certified," even if you know it's in your better interest to run said software). Sorry, but to say that that Paul guy from winsupersite is a MS fanboy would be a total understatement; he will say good things about anything that MS makes, even if it's not that great (i.e. Palladium).

Next Windows is Windows AMD64 for AMD's Athlon 64. Even Intel didnt recieve this kind of hospitality. After that comes Longhorn.

I doubt that, they'll probably just let people run them in 32-bit mode. Hell they don't even plan on porting more than like 4 server apps (besides the OS) to 64-bit apps and probably no client apps. No client side apps MS makes will benefit from 64-bit addressing, only things like large 3D programs, really large photoprograms, etc will have any need for 64-bit addressing.

Actually, MS has already released a 64bit version of Windows for the Itanium...
