The good news for Sound Storm lovers is that this chipset finally features these nice audio capabilities. It's now called Sound Storm 2 - no surprise there - but we don?t know anything about its features as yet.

Cool .

This chipset will be socket 754/939 ready and 940 compatible and all CPUs Athlon 64s, FX, Sempr0ns and Opterons will work on it.

Well if it takes as long for nVidia to get nForce 4 out after "launching" it as the 6800 cards have then it'll be next year.

Also, if they don't mess up the first generation of them like they did with nForce 3 150 then it'll be alright.

Sounds great though.

Just how good is the original Soundstorm? Does it effectively replace an Audigy 2 ZS?

Soundstorm, when implemented correctly, provided a very effective alternative to the original Audigy card. It is only a 5.1 card, so once the Audigy 2 came out with 6.1 support, and later the Audigy 2 ZS with 7.1 support, multi-channel support faded. Another problem was that it was only found on the nForce and nForce2 platform, which after the A64 and P4C chips arrived, again, support wavered. I have found that it is an excellent audio DSP and is great for a budget system!

Having moved from a SoundBlaster Live! to a Soundstorm mobo to an Audigy 2, I can safely say no, especially if you are a gamer. Only the Audigy series supports EAX3 and EAX4, I could tell a difference in positional sound when I was playing Halo PC (Audigy 2 seemed much more realistic than Soundstorm). However Soundstorm is still the only game in town to support realtime Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding, which is nice if you hook up your PC to an AV receiver.

more from the inq:

The chipset will be Socket 754/939 and 940 capable and will have multiprocessing capabilities. You will be able to use it as a single CPU platform. And you will also be able to use it as a two way, four way and up to a maximum of eight way as a multiprocessing platform.

This chipset will support a maximum of 32 PCI-E lanes says Theo, has suggested 1x16 X PCI-E slot, one 1 x 8X for SLI card and four times one lane for peripheral devices. This definitely confirms our previous claim that Nforce 4 will be a platform which will let you plug two Geforce 6 series PCI-E cards into a machine and end up with a much cheaper MP machine than those based on Intel's "Tumwater" chipset.

The chipset will support five PCI slots, two times Nvidia Gbit Ethernet and Nvidia RAID, similar in function to Intel's "Matrix Array", says Theo.

The Nforce 4, CK8-04 will support eight S-ATA drives and six P-ATA drives and for additional connectivity you will have no less then 10 USB 2.0 ports.

As for sound freaks, this chipset will feature SP-10, Soundstorm 2 audio that will be Dolby Digital 5.1 compliant and it will be able to do EX effects at 20 GFlops processing power. Soundstorm 2 supports 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 speaker configurations.

It sounds good doesn't it? But it will arrive towards the very end of this year. µ

even more (linked for above, edit) is this a joke? 8way, dual PCIe video, 8 SATA, 6 PATA, dual Gbit??

jebus, this sounds like an end-all chipset if I ever seen one...

I agree with you completely. I have never been this excited about a motherboard upgrade. Hopefully we won't even need the dual-CPU capability with the new dual-cored chips rumored to be coming out next year. They're bringing SoundStorm back though, that's the most exciting part! I'll bet it will be a 32-bit monster to compete with that new intel technology. Hopefully there will be some serious performance gains as well.

This was posted on nforcershq. Following a copy and paste of the original Inq article.

* Update

Our NVIDIA contact was asked for confirmation of the details in the INQ's article, here's the reply:

"There may be some truth in there, but none of it has anything to do with audio. "

So, sadly, no SoundStorm2 on the horizon for nForce4...

I've said it before, I'll say it again: nVidia products are like Star Trek movies - the good ones are the even numbered ones.

I wouldnt be surprised if it supports SLI technology for the 6800's either.

I think that comment is pretty ambiguous at best, and could be referring to the "20 GigaFlops" comment regarding the GPU (I personally find that very hard to believe). Hopefully it will have SoundStorm. That's a pretty wild rumor if it won't have SoundStorm whatsoever. I just think the latest article probably has some inaccuracies.

Nuts to that! The original nForce was pretty darned nice too! First dual-channel mobo out there! Onboard GF2MX back when that was still decent video. Soundstorm audio too, IIRC.

Solid and reliable - there's still some nForce1 owners in these forums!

I dont think motherboards require 2ns memory, so we are safe
