Yea, they finally might actually play hockey this year instead of "mug the guy with the puck" (and yes I am a Penquins Fan). I wonder how the obstruction rules will fair this year? Seems they start out strong, but when the playoffs come the refs keep their whistles in their pockets.

Shame because I love to see guys like Modano and Lemieux "strut their stuff", thing of beauty. Man, I missed this sport!

Rightly so, but I just can't believe Forsberg isn't up there with him! wow. perhaps his injury-prone nature has factored into his worth as a player. i mean, he's tough as nails, but he seems to be out 3-4 games at a time, numerous times through the season. although if i had him on my team, i would make sure he was always 100% and not nursing some slight or nagging injury.

But remember, he had all of last season off like everyone else to recoup totally from any injuries, so look for him to be at 100% consistantly for sure. Damn, thank GOD Clarke is getting speedy players for a change, I was sick of that dump-and-chase offense with slow legs like LeClair. We may lose that seasonal "tough team" tag, but I'll trade quickness and skill for toughness any day. I was pissed they got with of Markov and Fedorek, but they really redemed themselves now! FLYERSSSS!!!

I am hoping that everyone has fully recovered from all injuries, the action is fast and furious, and they can actually crack down on the holding and BS this time!

Yup, Forsberg definitely deserves to be near top salary IMHO

I can't agree more. I think if the NHL is to keep the fans interest this year they need to let the talent (reason we watch the game in the first place) be showcased!

I for one don't trust officials to enforce the obstruction. They've been saying they are going to enforce it the past few seasons, and they do for the first 6 weeks or so, then it's back to the usual clutching & grabbing. This will be no different.

Rudee;

I hope not, but as you correctly state, the NHL does not have a good track record enforcing this! Sad, this was the reason my favorite player (Mario Lemieux) left the game. One of the main reasons for his return was the hope that this rule would change the way the game was played.

Oh well, I could go on all night but out of respect to the OP, I'll get back on topic!

I'm really glad I found this thread. Never realized so many true hockey fans on AT (don't venture into OT forum much) and its good to see some old names I recognize as well (Insane3D, haven't talked to you since I built my EPOX 8K7A, which I am typing on right now BTW). Hehe, lets have some fun!

Regards,

The leafs basically screwed themselves in the past few years by signing aging guys to big contracts. Now they're stuck with them, and can't trade them as no other team will want to take those contracts over. Can't sign many new guys because of the cap either.

Pretty much. But we'll be in better position next season when Belfour's gone and Sundin's contract for the last 2 seasons reduces to 4 mill.

I really thought that Bob was going to bring a power defensemen to the team but Dandenault!!!! oh well. Kovalev is one of the top 15 best players in the league, I'm happy that we sign him to a four years contract, I don?t think Forsberg would had choosing Montreal over Philadelphia.

Kovalev for four years is not a bad signing. Sure he'll be tailing off at the end but he'll still be making that kind of money with whatever team he's playing with. Look at Modano, the guy is 35 already and signs for $3.5M/year (and he could have signed more had he gone elsewhere).

Dandenault is another good signing, he's a decent though not incredible player. Face it though, top rate defensemen are making a mint in the new NHL because they are a rarity. With the Flyers taking Rathje and Hatcher there weren't that many left on the market that would be interested in the Habs. Niedermayer would not get $6M from the Habs, and getting Rafalski would be difficult. In the grand scheme of things, I much rather have Dandenault for 4 years at $1.7M, than Brisebois making $3M+.

It should be interesting to see what happens today with Selanne, Kariya and co.

The most coveted defenceman in the free agent market finally found a home on Thursday, as veteran blueliner and 2004 Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer has signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The deal for four years at $6.725 million US per season...
(from tsn.ca)

Marty Lapointe has also signed with the Chicago Blackhawks...

stats ... he's as good as goal scorers get without being superstars... not to mention the fact that he hasn't played with any.

BTW, Gretzky was not a pure goal scorer. You know what that term means right ? "Goal-scorer's goal"... Satan is capable.

I've been out of the loop for a few. Either way...he's gone! :frown: I know he scored most of their goals. Thats why its an upset.

Relax. With the new FA rules and salary cap, big name players will be available more frequently. In fact, the FA crop next year could be excellent. The Rangers spent the last 10 years spending money have nothing to show for it, let this season be a chance for the rookies to play a bit.

There are a few players I really didn't want to lose. Modano, #1, I was uber pissed yesterday at the news he didn't sign, I am soooo relieved to see he did today.

Turgeon is a BIG loss though. Wonder who we will have in the end of this mess.

GO STARS!
