That's awesome. They're slowly becoming contenders. Rick Nash is phenomonal.

Yeah this is a great signing by Columbus.

the free agent list
OTTAWA:
Ray Emery, Mike Fisher, Martin Havlat, Andrew Hedlund, Marian Hossa, Chris Kelly, Brian McGratton, Chris Neil, Christoph Schubert, Jason Spezza, Antoine Vermette, Anton Volchenkov.

man, they have some key players on that list. Havlat and Hossa in particular have been there forever. I'm not a huge Ottawa fan, but they've been pretty exciting to watch in the past, and good Toronto fodder in the playoffs.

Rumor in the Detroit Free Press today is that Darren McCarty is close to signing with Calgary.

WOW that would be a great fit for him! Especially now that they have gotten rid of Commodore. I'm uber-geeked to see how these chips fall...

Just saw this interesting rumor over on the Boston Globe's site...

A Canadian website (www.rds.ca) reported that the Bruins are one of three teams (along with Pittsburgh and Atlanta) that have made an offer to free agent Mike Modano.

Modano as a 2nd line center? A little competition to keep Joe on his toes?

Looks like they are also talking with Bryan Berard and also looking at Jim Mckenzie...nothing too exciting there, although Berard makes our defense more exciting to watch, and with no more 2 line passes, it might be interesting.

man the rangers are going to suck for the next couple of years (not much different from the past seven years i guess). Oh well better with the prospects than with overpaid, over the hill veterans

More info on Modano possibly going to Boston

For the first time in his career, Mike Modano may be donning a jersey other than that of the Stars.

According to a report on RDS.ca, the Boston Bruins are expected to sign the 35-year-old centre with an announcement coming as early as Tuesday. Modano had three offers to consider with the Bruins being the front-runner. The Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins are the others in the race for his services.

On Monday, Modano told the Dallas Morning News that the Stars never made an offer to him or agent Brian Lawton and that the Stars are hesitant about offering him a long-term deal because of his age.

"It just doesn't make sense," Modano told the newspaper. ''I'm old at 35 and Zubie isn't? I don't get it."

Modano was refering to the three-year, $12 million contract defenceman Sergei Zubov signed on Sunday. Zubov, 35, has played eight seasons with the Stars, helping the club win the Stanley Cup in 1999.

"All things being equal, I'd love to be here," he said. "It's a great place, and I want to finish my career here. But I guess we just have to go out and see what's out there."

Modano was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1st round (1st overall) in 1988. In 1101 career games, the 6-3, 205-pound Modano has collected 458 goals and 1106 points.

Over the next 2-4 weeks there is sure to be a lot of activity around the NHL, so I thought it would be best to keep all of it in one thread. So post whatever here regarding free agency.

Last night: Zubov resgiend with Dallas - 3 years, $12 million. I'd say he was about half a million overpaid, but not too bad for a very good D-Man.

Zubov... man I remember back when he was a Ranger. I think he actually led the team in scoring the year they won the cup.

No way did he lead the Rangers in scoring that year. I always thought Zubov pulled in around 20 goals a year with the Rangers.

Leetch was the highest scoring defensman, and I don't know who the highest overall was, but Graves had over 50 goals, and Messier may have been around that same mark.

Zubov had the most points that year. HockeyDB - 93/94 Rangers

That's what I meant, and that is the exact page I was going to use to prove it

TB needs to keep him. Without him, we wouldn't have lasted long in the playoffs. IMHO, he was the real MVP in the finals.

Another source, "The Lightning will be unable to sign both St. Louis and Lecavallier [sic]. Martin has been telling people of his desire to play on the Rangers if he must leave, but I bet it will be Vinny who is tendered an offer by Montreal, and some sort of sign and trade is worked out..I put it at 50% that Vinny is a Hab soon."

Sheesh. Is there a player on the Lightning that we can afford to lose? It seems that we need everybody back.

Vinny would love to be in Montreal and would be a great fit with that young, talented, and fast team. Did you see the beautiful goal between the legs that Vinny scored against Montreal in the playoffs? I think it was with 10 seconds left.

*groan* yes.

Vinny grew up 10 minutes from my house (I believe he still has a home in the area), so I'm pretty sure he'd like to be back in Montreal.

With that said, if the Lightning can Keep the Bulin wall with Boyle, St-Louis, and Vinny they'll be serious contenders for the cup again this year. So that's a good incentive to stay in Tampa

Agreed. Holik has showed almost nothing since leaving the Devils...4mill+ is too much for him IMO.
