B's sign three, wait for Modano
By Steve Conroy
Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - Updated: 01:00 AM EST
With fans dreaming of superstars falling into their laps, the Bruins opened the free agent sweepstakes yesterday by signing two familiar faces, wingers Glen Murray and Shawn McEachern.
The B's later added center Dave Scatchard, but general manager Mike O'Connell was waiting last night to find out if he had bagged the big game he'd been hunting ? Dallas Stars center Mike Modano ? though it didn't seem likely. The B's started the day as the front-runners for Modano, but the Stars ? the only organization he has played for in his 15-year career and where it's believed his heart still lies ? jumped into the fray amid reports the 35-year-old had all but re-signed in Big D.
A late-night report on Canadian Web site rds.ca saying the deal was done could not be confirmed.
Earlier in the evening, Brian Lawton, Modano's agent, said a decision had not been made.
``We haven't made up our mind yet, but Boston's been very proactive,'' said Lawton, who
added that Modano could decide as early as last night.
According to the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, the Stars have offered a five-year deal worth $17.5 million. Meanwhile, industry sources put the Bruins' offer at $21 million over four years.
O'Connell would not comment on the negotiations, but said that if the Modano deal fell through, he would still be in the market for a top-flight center. Still unsigned are Peter Forsberg, Alexei Zhamnov, Pierre Turgeon, Eric Lindros, Vincent Damphousse and former Bruin Jason Allison.
``We've talked to a number of free agents about coming to Boston,'' said O'Connell, who would not get into specifics.
On the positive side, the B's signed Murray (111 goals for the B's over the last three seasons) to a four-year, $16.6 million deal and McEachern to a two-year deal at $1 million per season.
The 29-year-old Scatchard, who scored 27 goals for the Islanders in 2002-03 and is another Lawton client, received a four-year deal, but financial terms were not available.
``They were the first team to call (on Monday) and they didn't screw around,'' said Murray, who made $3.85 million in 2003-04. ``They made a couple of offers that were really legitimate. I had a few other teams calling, but obviously Boston was my first choice. My family loves the city and I love playing there. We got it done and couldn't be more happy. Now I just need my centerman back.''
That, of course, would be Joe Thornton, who could become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Murray said he talked to Thornton throughout the day yesterday and, though not claiming any inside information, expects the B's and their captain to work out a long-term deal.
``I really do think they're going to get it done, that's just my opinion,'' Murray said. ``He's a top five guy in the league and you don't get those guys too often. He's (26 years old) and he's a hell of a player. I might be biased, but I think it's pretty true.''
McEachern, a Waltham native who played for the B's in 1995-96, was happy to be coming home.
``A couple of teams showed interest the first day, but naturally when your hometown team shows an interest it's something you have to look at,'' McEachern said. ``It's tough this time with free agency because nobody knows what kind of team anybody's going to have. But with the players that Boston has and the players they could have, with Glen Murray signing, and with Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov, (Patrice) Bergeron and (Andrew) Raycroft - that's a lot of good players right there.''

So, either him and Forsberg won't play together, or the 'nucks will go for Forsberg too?

That'd be great to get him too. Rumours are that the 'nucks are close to signing Niedermayer as well.

I already hate Peter "Take a Dive" Forsberg, so the 'Nucks might as well sign him.

Yeah, they tried no more obstruction last year (well, two years ago) and it lasted for about two weeks into the season, then it was back to normal.

I know, but they aren't going to pay that much for one player that is that old.
I know that also. Old to the wild is 30.Originally posted by: Aquaman
