NIC and IRQ conflicts

I was trying to help somebody with their computer, but I ran into a few problems. This is a Gateway desktop on the network in a dorm. After a lot of playing with stuff, I found that whenever I unplug the network cord the computer works fine (without the internet), and when I plug the cord in, the computer successfully receives an IP address and stuff from the DCHP server. But I can't run anything, it frezzes when I try to run something from the start menu and it just refuses to run anything on the desktop. I found that it initially had the same IRQ as the onboard USB controller, once I disabled the controller the computer worked fine with internet untill I restarted, then it did the same thing as before. I tried the NIC in all of the available PCI slots with the same thing happening. (in 2 of the slots it had conflicts with the USB, in the other 2 open slots it had issues with the sound card (Live!))

I probably left a few things out, let me know if you need to know something else.

Try putting it into the highest slot, even if you have to move another card. It may have to be in a bus mastering slot and not all mbs have bus mastering beyond the first 1 or 2 slots. Haven't seen that in a while, but used to see it a lot.

I had it right under the AGP but the sound card was only one below that, do you think it'd work if I moved the sound card down more?

It's not a terribly old computer, it's a 1Ghz AMD...

You can try moving the sound card to a lower slot. You can also try installing the nic without the soundcard in the box, then install the soundcard. Windows may then assign different resources for it. Do you have a setting for PnP os in the bios? You can also try changing that setting.

Sounds more like a driver issue rather than a Resource issue.

What OS and NIC card are you using?
(some Dlink, Netgear, Linksys nic cards do not play well with SBLive's)

The bios is all retarted, there are hardly any options to change, including PnP Os. I had hard time even getting into it cause it didn't tell me what key to press on startup. I tried F2, F10, delete, and insert; none worked so I just pressed a bunch of keys and I get in somtimes.

First thing that doesn't help is that it's running Windows ME. And it does have a D-Link DFE TX+ and a SB, I don't remember offhand if it's live though. If it is a Live, is there any hope of getting it to work? I'll be working on it again maybe wednesday.

Just put a D-link 530tx in a box last week that had a SB Live value in it, Winxp. No problems. F1 works on some computers to get into the setup.

Get a new NIC, preferably one from a different manufacturer.

It may just be an incorrectly configured driver, or a hosed windows install - but for $5 just get a different NIC and try it, you've got very little to lose.

If it doesn't fix the problem, then you've got a spare NIC for troubleshooting, and you then know it isn't the NIC itself.

I finally got a chance to look at it again this week, but unfortunatly I havn't a chance to get another NIC. So, long story short, it still doesn't work. But I've got a related question. I read a few things about Windows 2K and XP assigning multiple devices to IRQ 9 or 11. This machine is running ME and it had multiple devices on IRQ 9, could that still be the same thing even though I haven't found this problem mentioned with ME?

Move the nic card away from the video card. The AGP port and FIRST pci slot share the same resources.

It had the same problem no matter where the card was. It never had conflicts with the video card, even when it was in the first slot.

Your gonna need to assign an addy to the nic card, I'll dig thru my notes as to what it should be, in the meantime, maybe someone can provide 1?
