This upgrade may enable you to drop your outside news subscription, i.e. if you're a comcast subscriber and if 2GB/month you deem adequate.

An email segment from cc:

Dear Comcast Newsgroup Customer,

As you may already know, Comcast has recently upgraded our Newsgroup service offering. Now you get a total of two gigabytes of downloads each month (previously one gigabyte) and headers are not counted towards your download totals.

Its been this way for a while dude...

They should also reset the download count to zero, at the end of the monthly cycle.
At present, if you accidentally go over the limit, they start deducting for the next month's limit.

True. But it's better than the former 1gb per month.

I'd do that in about 30 minutes before. :disgust:

What they should do is have a unlimited tier - for $x.xx more per month. It would keep all of us that use an outside news provider on the comcast network, generate some extra income, and make me happy (the comcast news servers are very quick).

Obviously I don't know anything about using a Usenet. Why don't you just search newsgroups with Google? Why do you have to have large storage for Usenet? I'm clueless obviously, any bonehead answers?

If you know google, yuu could use it to type "usenet" and search.
There's a rumor that with certain utilities and programs you can download any software, movie, music or whatever.

Gotta love Usenet. It's been my friend since '92. Pretty much went straight from my Commodore 64 BBS's to the usenet when I went to college.. After Comcast dropped the free news I went with Agent Premium Newsgroups over at Forteinc.com. Unlimited downloads, 10 day retention for $14.99. Anybody know of a GOOD service with a better price? (Although I'm happy to pass my business over to Forte Inc. I've been a user of Agent since '94.)

Giganews, is the best. I've got cableone as my ISP and can download as much as I want, though they cap your download speeds after a point.

Newshosting, it's 4 cents cheaper and the retention is a lot longer.

i've been using newshosting's unlimited plan for about a year now and it's worth every penny. 3+ week retention, awesome download speeds, 99%+ complete, what more could you want?

Yeah I went through a little of that too but it was nothing serious I have to admit. Besides, I don't think other hosting services have referral programs like Newshosting does. Depending on when the hell the ISP decides to ever install my friend's DSL, I'll have three referral kickbacks totalling $4.50 a month

Seriously guys if you use Newshosting and have friends you should introduce to usenet, their referral plan is free to open to any subscriber.

Sorry to be the scrub here, but what is this newsgroup service. I know what usenet is but what the heck is the comcast thing. From what I've randomly gathered from the thread is it's an internet plan for use only with newsgroups, like something held over from before the "actual" (1995) internet.

Astraweb Usenet Server

Unlimited/mo. and prepaid plans available. I can personally vouch for them since I've been with them for over a year, using their prepaid plans. Unlimited connections and unlimited speed (at least I max out my connection which is 3mbps down).

Do it.

Yes, Astraweb is IDEAL for me because they offer pre-paid and headers don't count. Very fast, but I don't know their retention.

Correct. Back in '94, Usenet was all the internet I needed! (Besides email) About a year ago, Comcast desided to scrap offering their own usenet servers, and gave their customers a 1GB/mo account on Giganews. For those of us that downloaded lots of content every day, this was a kick in the nuts... Always struck me as funny, that Comcast offered "high speed" but then yanked away the ability to download the stuff I wanted...
