No, a 2nd stick is for games where you move in 3D space so you can move the camera and your character at the same time. And it doesn't really matter if it's a 2nd stick or a 2nd D-pad. Look at SM64. Stick for movement, C buttons for camera.

I'm not sure why you'd site the 64 as an example of good controls. AFAIC it's one of the worst controllers in video game history.

Yeah the lack of quality controls on the N64 along with a crappy library is what made me leave consoles. I only played Final Fantasy 7 on the PS and then sold it.

They announced a few days ago there will be a stick add on like the orginal one.

If Amazon does not have it for preorder in the next few weeks, will probably preorder it from gamestop.

The N64 was Nintendo's 1st foray into 3D gaming and they correctly designed their controller so it was possible for the player to move the camera and their avatar at the same time and independently of each other. The C stick was added to the GC controller, on the opposite side of the joystick, so once again, player's could easily operate them simultaneously. There is no C stick on the wiimote/nunchuk, but once again, there is a D-pad and joystick designed to be operated simultaneously. It boggles the mind as to why Nintendo left the joystick and D-pad to be only accessible one at a time on the 3DS.

On another note, the N64 controller is far from one of the worst controllers in video game history. The very left most side was useless, but it was probably one of the most ergonomic controllers ever designed.

Indeed. Remember the ones with the number pads. Colecovision and Intellivision had them. IIRC, Atari was using it right up to the Jaguar. Speaking of Atari, the 5200 controllers were notorious for breaking. I actually didn't mind the N64 controller at the time. Though nothing can compare to the Dual Analogue and later Dual Shock. You have to credit Sony on such a good design that we're still using it 15 years later, and all other controllers emulate it in some way. Wiimote notwithstanding, though the Wii classic controller does.

I'm upgrading to the 3DSXL when it comes out and selling my black 3DS after I transfer all the info over.

I will be getting one of these on launch along with 3DS Tales of the Abyss. My current gen home consoles will probably be staying in their boxes for a very long time... at least until this relentless military shooter fad finally ends and devs start making real games again if ever.

I've not been able to find a size comparison between a 3DS XL and DSi XL. More interested in screen size for DS RPGs but no sense in not picking up the newer 3D model right? I'm coming from a standard DS Lite. From what I can tell, Tales of the Abyss is supposed to be good enough to make it worth buying a 3DS.

I would kill for a Xenosaga port to 3DS.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The dual analog controller was pretty much a SNES controller with analog sticks (which the N64 controller had before the dual analog controller was released). They would also copy Nintendo's rumble feature in their dual shock, and of course there's the Move/Wiimote thing.

What I think he's saying is that we're still using the same controller even after this many years.

Ah crap, didn't realize 3DS was higher res. Guess I'm picking up a regular DSi XL for big screen native res DS games anyway.

Should have a HDMI/Component out like the PSP does /sigh.

I can't wait. I had the original 3DS, but I got rid of it because I have long fingers and it got uncomfortable to hold after playing for a while. Same with the PSP.

Only because the boomerang and six-axis were horrible and lack of creativity I think.

Boomerang was an interesting design but I don't think it was very ergonomic. Six Axis and Dual Shock are the same thing. The former just lacked a rumble motor. Sony claimed it interfered with the motion controls. Total BS of course. Just they were just desperate to cut costs on their $600 console.

In regards to the Dual Shock, it being a SNES controller with sticks, yes, true. Though that basic design has been used in all successful systems for a while now.

Why? So 9/10th of DS shelf space becomes Call of Duty too?

DS is the only system left with decent games anymore that AREN'T all FPS ADHD blow up the red barrels and win the game type games. Leave it be.

What? I don't see "ONRY FPS" on the PS3 at all...

1) the rumble came with the dual shock...wasn't some extra you bought to plug in.

2) Two analog sticks were much better than one for a ton of different games.
