no air flow

I have a 4 year old Fridgedaire A/C model # LRA187MT2. It is not blowing the air out like it should. You have to get about 6 " away to feel it. We bought it brand new in 2010. The compressor seems to be kicking off and on as normal. We cleaned the coils(which were dirty). We are in the middle of a heat wave in Ohio and really hard to find an A/C right now.

Also of note, did you clean the condenser or the evaporator?

The part on the rear of the unit with hot air coming out is the condenser. If you can hear the fan but not feel much air, you probably need to clean the evaporator.

I just helped a friend replace a broken fan in an ac unit. It was surprisingly easy. In this case, I'd say it's the motor though.

These things sit all fall, winter and spring. Stuff breaks from sitting and you don't know it until you really need it.

How many BTU's is it? You might be better off hitting up Craigslist and buying one to get you through the summer than trying to find parts and fix this one in a hurry.

It might help as an emergency measure, but I think a rigged fan would leak too much air to be permanent fix. The one I did had two sets of fans. A turbo in the front, and a regular fan in the rear. It was the regular fan that broke. Those take up a lot of room in the case, and move a lot of air for their size. A desk fan would be a feeble replacement.

Box fan plus duct tape would work fine. Better than sweating your balls off.

Dumb question but they usually have a pull-out filter in the front, has it been cleaned lately?
