Hi,

I've got a weird problem which I can't seem to figure out and I hope some of you guys can help me.

I was doing a complete reinstallation if XP on my PC when I noticed that there was suddenly no display being outputted by my graphics card during POST when it restarted. At first I thought, no display during POST is really bad so I tried troubleshooting from there. After a long fruitless session with still no display during POST I noticed that the computer still booted if I left it alone. So my monitor would be on "standby" until it loads WinXP and then everything is back to normal.

When I run a command prompt on full screen it also sends the monitor back to standby.

Any ideas as to what's screwing my display?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it sounds like you have your video card set up for dual monitors. Was there a time when you had two connected? If you can get into the control panel, view the display properties and make sure the 2nd monitor is not enabled. If it is, disable it and all should be back to normal on the next boot.

Sometimes settings get hosed and confuse the monitor. When at a full screen command prompt try turning the monitor off then on. If it works then uninstall the drivers and run driverclean and regclean then reinstall.

That is pretty odd, windows drivers have absolutly nothing to do with the display at post, that is all pre-OS, so it's definatly very strange. A possiblility however would be if your motherboard has integrated video, or if you have a second video card. There would be a setting in bios for initial display device, and it could be set to the wrong one, which would cause your symptoms. I can't think of any other reason why the display would work fine in windows, but not at post.

I have a Asus A8N-SLI board and only one video card which is a 6800GT. Never had a dual monitor setup. It is really weird because no matter what I tinkered it just didn't display anything. What I did do though was unplug the PSU and went to bed (with much frustration). When I switched it on the next day, voila, it displayed the POST diagnostics.

Weird weird weird. But thanks for the suggestions!!!

Might want to reset CMOS via motherboard jumper and/or remove and reseat and/or replace CMOS battery.
