No DVD Playback in Media Player

I've installed Win XP Home addition and can't play DVD's in Media Player. Graphics card is a Geforce2 GTS. Everything worked fine in with WIN98 and Power DVD. Media Player does not seem to recognize my DVD drive (Pioneer 116) although it is identified and functioning properly in device manager. Suggestions please!

open your media player under options and click the file types and make sure the dvd video tab is marked.

Checked it - DVD was checked. Any other suggestions? I'm stumped.

Tried it and got the following message "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

I thought that this version had its own decoder. What gives?

If you have PowerDVD why not use that?

As far as I am aware media player doesn't come with its own DVD decoder. You will still need a 3rd party decoder.

I have version 2 of pwer DVD which is not XP compatible. I've tried it but it doesn't work, even in compatibility mode.

If that's the case a few bucks should solve my problem! In the absence of any other suggestions in the next hour or so I will upgrade to the latest power dvd. Thanks.

AFAIK PowerDVD will update whatever version you have to give it XP compatability. That is if you are running PowerDVD 3.0 they have an update to the latest 3.0, which I believe is XP compatible. Poke around on their site and you should be able to find a free upgrade.

Windows Media Player needs a spetial DVD pack that you need to purchase from the Microsoft website. Also PowerDVD has free updates that will make it compatable with XP or you can go the PowerDVD 4.0 XP route. Also make sure that you have the latest video drivers and make sure they are fully compatable with XP.

On another note, I have an ATI Radeon, PowerDVD XP and WMP with the required DVD pack. But when I try playing the a DVD with WMP the DVD plays thorough the required inroductions and the FBI warning but when I aclualy start the real movie I get an error. Anybody know what gives? Both PowerDVD and the new ATI player work fine but I would still like to try the WMP as it may have some uique features.

wmp is too toyish...IMO for dvd


for power dvd to work upgrade to power dvd 2000

works fine now and i do have older power dvd but that wont work ,

Some people are making decoders available specifically for use with Windows XP and Windows Media Player. I'm using the XPack from InterVideo. Costs $15 for the DVD decoder, $20 for both DVD and MP3 decoders.

WMP is an excellent DVD player. I use it at full-screen. The controls disappear if you stop moving the mouse cursor. It's actually quite elegant, and I prefer it over PowerDVD, WinDVD, and CineMaster -- all of which I've used before.
