And spend $130 more...
And have a much better chance of hitting that 3Ghz.
Which a lot of people are doing with air cooling. And if not 3Ghz at least 2.9

and you care to show me where
overclockers.com forum comes to mind 1st.
I've actually been looking around at a lot of different forums and the same thing keeps coming up.
The 2.26's are a really nice o/c'er
Most of them are using the Alpha 8942 or the swiftech mcx478 heatsinks though.

People are buying them from Googlegear.com for $248

Edit:

The average with the stock heatsink seems to be 2.85Ghz.
Also look in the Hardforum for more info.

I have read that Asus P4T533 with 512mb rim4200 for about $300 on the fourm here but is it true? Does anyone have a link to actually buy at that price? It looks too good to be true..

I've looked all around for 4200 but nobody has it, even stocked with the P4T533 like TomsHardware says Asus is doing. Quite a few places have the P4T533, but RIMM4200 seems to pretty much be non-existant right now.

If I am not mistaken that 1.8a might not reach 133FSB as easy as 1.6a? (I have my 1.6a )
But if you got one of those mobo w/ fixed AGP/PCI clock, (Friend has 1.8a w/ Abit BD7 @125FSB but fixed 33mhz PCI) then you shouldn't be worry.

That's what I am hoping. It seems everytime Intel discontinues a CPU they release a new speed grade and the bottom CPUs drop in price.

I am so undecided still - whether to get a 1.6a NOW or WAIT for the Asus MB/hi-perf RDRAM combo and buy the 1.8a at that time.

I guess it really doesn't matter since BOTH the 1.6a and the 1.8a are very nice overclockers.

They'll just drop the 1.8a into the 1.6a price bracket. You didn't expect them to sell the 1.6 forever did you? They are almost a full Ghz past that now.

This could be a goof thing.

Thre's a 3 year warranty on 1.6's, so if they're not making them anymore what are they going to replace them with? Hopefully faster northwood's !!

WHSLacrossekid:

I guess. But how often do you see a processor go bad? Not very often I'd hope. Especially natural deaths, in fact I can't remember hearing about anything except user induced physical damage to processors causing them to go kaput.

Don't worry... Intel keeps a supply on hand, just in case they need to replace a cpu. They still have cpu's to cover units manufactured three years ago.

And no, you won't get anything faster.

Yes...you tend to get faster chips when you spend more money But the performance improvement doesn't seem worth all that extra money to me.
