Everyone always talks about Dell, IBM, and Toshiba, for obvious reasons, but I never hear anything about Gateway notebooks. Are they no good or?

I really like my Gateway 5340, its 2.9lbs and OEM'd from Samsung.

Of course, none of these companies actually manufacturer their own notebooks, so brand name doesn't matter much.

They are ok. Nothing special. They are less cheap (in price) and configurable than Dells and don't have the high quality craftsmanship feel of IBM ThinkPads. Their 450 series is pretty nice in my book. Kind of big and heavy for a thin and light, but it does sport a 15 inch port and has the whole gamut of ports. Trackpad buttons kind of suck though. Overall, I'd say solid but uninspired.

EDIT: 15 inch screen I mean

We have had a number of Gateway laptops in our office and I personally own a 9300.

I don't think they are very nice. We have a lot of problems with them. We switched to Thinkpad's at the office, and everyone loves them.

People recommend Dell because their laptops are relatively cheap compare to others. Adn as as far as IBM, I'll tell you this. Once you try IBM Thinkpad T-series (made from titanium composite), which is lighter than most of the plastic laptops out there, and at the same time 10x more durable, you'll never want to look at anything else

HEHE I agree. I actually repair laptops. Gateway are horrible to get parts for and it sucks trying to get into them. Also the failure rate is extremly high in them. As for ibms there great but if one does break they suck to repair.

Have a Great DAY!!!

I would say the same thing about Dells. You can get parts for them but they are awful(Dells quality control SUCKS). At least the Latitude CPx laptops are. The Inspirons seem to be much better.

Just to give an idea of quality control dell has, I was replacing the screen on a inspiron. Dell had to send me 3 screens before they got it right. The first screen had a huge line running vertically. The second screen didn't work. Finally the third one was brand new and worked fine. Dell likes to take RMA parts and just ship them back out to customers instead of testing them. I can't tell you how many times they would send me a "refurb" motherboard that was screwed. They had obviously not tested it or tested it for about 1 minute before packaging it back up.

My university started a laptop program with the Latitude series. That was a MISTAKE. About 60% failure within one year. My university switched to IBM laptops but that was after I quit working there.
